I had thought that the value/lack of value for kale has been individually decided, worldwide.

It has seemed to me that I was one of the very few of the oldsters who has eaten it since the 1950's. That was only because we had both grown kale and because Mom shopped at health food stores. In this century, younger generations have:

By the Way, I think that Mom's food habits have a lot to do with Dad's health. Sure. They were married for 60 years and Dad is 101 now.

My grandmother, her sister and brother, were born and raised on a farm. They were raised by their mother who every morning to make breakfast, would take a home grown and butchered pork belly, cut it into 1/4 inch thick strips for bacon, scrambled about a dozen eggs, then slice a home baked bread and spread a generous helping of rendered goose fat onto it . YUM !!! ... They all continued with that upbringing for the rest of their lifetime. Grandmother lived to be 98+, her sister 97+ and brother 101+.
Since we all know that these foods are unhealthy for one and all... so, it must be the healthy air wafting from the pig sty, chicken house and goose pond or it it genetics ? :hu :caf

Thanks to one and all on the stroll down family histories. I’ve seen no recommendations on kale variety but that they are all tough and taste like cardboard. Even chickens or cattle may not eat?

Could be a combination of things, @bobm: environment, diet, genetics, luck ...

Dad's father didn't make it to 80. Dad had 6 brothers that lived to be adults. The youngest to go was described to me as an alcoholic. Traffic accident with him as a pedestrian. Second drowned at 60 during a family picnic. Looked like another alcohol related "accident."

One brother managed to make it to 71 but died of lung cancer. Of course, he could have died as a kid, parachuting into France during WW2. Maybe smoking cigarettes helped in the recovery from the bullet wound in his leg.

Dad has lived 10% more years than even the oldest of his family of generation. Counting the years, Mom outlived 2 of her 4 sisters and all 4 of her brothers. She lived 18 years longer than her mother. All, died from "natural causes."

Of course, eating the rooster fed a kale diet is known to have tremendous health benefits.

Steve ... for countless generations where we came from where is so cold in the winters that pine trees would explode into splinters. So , If one survived past 5 years old from pneumonia, mumps or measels, you lived to a RIPE OLD AGE. We ate anything and everything that was produced on the farm, rivers , ocean and forests. :idunno
