Mulebloom……..I like it!

We had another storm come through last night. The garden is soggy like a wet sponge. The sun is shining, maybe I can get in the garden tomorrow. :fl

I just came in. I had a bunch of beets, partial packets. So I planted them. I planted Bulls Blood, Chioggia, Albino, Cylindra, and Sugar Beets. I planted Purple Plum and Daikon radishes.

I planted 4 1/2 rows of Painted Mountain corn- 214 seeds. I planted 30 Purple of Sicily Cauliflower plants. Some look good, some are kinda small.

Then I watered everything in real good, fed critters and came in. Drinking a glass of water, then fixing chicken wings this evening.

I worked in the garden this afternoon. Last night it was 34* and a light frost. Today I set out 28 purple Brussel sprouts, Red Rubine variety and 25 green Brussel sprouts. I don't know if they will survive our killer summer, much less make any sprouts.

Anybody grow Brussel sprouts? Got any pointers?

Supper was left over chicken wings from last night, cause I made a double batch. I love a heat n' serve supper!

Someone was offering 2 free six packs of brussels sprouts and there weren't any takers for at least 2 days! I was so tempted but I have absolutely no more room.

I have grown Brussels sprouts only twice.

What I learned: they were aphid magnets both seasons in this environment. More so than any other brassica that I have grown. However, all of this family attract aphids. Because of how cabbage grows, aphids can ruin those plants.

I have to be prepared to spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Both of these sprays can clean the plants of these bugs. I have to pay attention, especially early in the season. Given too much time on the plants, aphid populations can explode and really weaken the plants. Brussels sprouts aren't hard to spray and stand up well to it.

Thanks for the tip Steve. I'm growing brussel sprouts for the first time this year. Aphids were my arch nemesis in CA where the ants and aphids ran the joint. I couldn't keep a tomato or bouganvilla alive to save my life. I'll be armed with neem oil and watching for them!
