Ten years ago I did layer, mix, turn piles but I also had DH helping. He would move the piles and actually had a screen and sifted the finished out and put the not finished back and rebuilt piles. I would make a pile while he was at work and we could get them smoking, but now after all the years of his illness and since he died, I am extremely out of shape. I have a sit down job and I do need exercise, but planting and keeping the garden might be all I can do or little by little I get back in shape.

yeah, i'm walking up and down the road to help get my legs strengthened for this coming season. i can tell i'm not in the best of shape, but after a few weeks it starts to come back. just have to be patient and try not to injure myself again.

When I do work outside, it seems like I am doing pretty good, but the next day not so good. I really do not feel I am gaining a lot of ground in the getting in shape area. I think I will start walking in the mornings again and see if it helps.

Did I miss something? Are you guys hurt?

i'm still recovering from pulling an achilles tendon last fall. it's taking forever. i don't think it will fully recover until this fall - i just need to be patient and not re-injure this spring/summer. not being able to work very hard last year most of the summer due to previous tendon pull in my arm so the whole season last year was kinda light and i didn't feel like i accomplished much. i walked and shovelled snow this winter but that's not really enough exercise for me so as spring improves i hope i can get out for more walks and longer walks - but i have to gradually build up over weeks to feel the improvement. it doesn't happen all at once. thanks for asking. :)

I actually gave myself permission to make the investment in starting a garden just for the exercise benefits. I’ve got a long history of losing and gaining weight. I don’t have too much trouble keeping my eating in check, but I don’t enjoy exercise at all and it’s so important to get some! Then I remembered the hard work of landscaping and gardening and it seemed like a very active and challenging hobby I actually enjoy and see results from- food and flowers!

So I too am out of shape, but getting going in the garden. I have to break up the work, both for my poor body and because right now it’s still so cold an hour or two is all I can do before I need to warm up. I’m really enjoying it so far. I don’t have to force myself to do it, I want to. And the plants force me to do the work and not put it off. I worked hard to get all these seeds going, I’m not going to let them all die by not getting their garden beds ready in time! Let’s get in garden shape!

That is exactly why I started this years ago, doing more and more. I have a sit down job. I am a medical transcriptionist working from home. I get paid for what I type. No vacation and if I want a raise I type faster. lol I think it has helped keep me in shape over the years, but I had help with bigger projects from DH and DD lived here and she planted flowers and pulled weeds. Now it is just me and DS and he used to like to mow grass and do things, but now he works all day and he has to do the firewood work his dad used to do. He will do whatever I ask in the garden, but it is not fun for him. I love gardening and being outside. Here is to 2019 the here to get in shape!

I, too, have seen 5yo medium pine shavings that have not broken down, so it can happen. Perhaps you can mix them with rabbit poo? You, know--browns and greens?

Let’s get in garden shape!
We should probably have a new thread on that ... or, "what did you do in the garden, today."

If we go beyond just sitting and enjoying the surroundings, almost everything we do in the garden is exercise. Mostly, for me, it's stretching - stretching across as many feet of growing space as I can reach. I haven't moved around very well for many years although walking has always been a favorite. So ... I stretch.

Today, we set up the temporary hoop house over 2 beds in the backyard. Before starting and while waiting for the sun to warm the plastic film, I pulled out another front yard fence panel. (Maybe I can't call it the "front any more since I'm way down the side yard.)

Attaching the film to the door and window frame took the most time but holding it down to the ground with rock and bricks takes some work (& stretching)!. It's now as secure as it ever is. No more snow!

i hate exercise just to exercise, i do garden for many reasons and the meaningful exercise is one of those reasons. walking up and down the road is ok if there is something different to see or for the fresh air, but if i'm stuck inside on an exercise bike or a treadmill i can at least read a book or something while doing that. here where i am at now there's no room for an inside exercise machine so i can do some callistenics or Tai Chi and stretches if i'm stuck inside... i much prefer to be outside and doing stuff around the yard instead.

a long time ago i found out (during Tai Chi practices) that if we went outside for the summer to do our work outs that our balance would be tremendously improved by being forced to deal with an uneven surface. walking or running on a track or the road just isn't the same as what your body has to accomplish dealing with uneveness. practicing Tai Chi on the beach in sand for a month and your legs would be really strong and your sense of balance so much better. then we would go back inside after the summer back to the smooth floor of a classroom and it would be like, "Oh my this is so much easier/better!"

so for people, as they get older it is well worth doing some exploring off the pathways to challenge your body and to keep more sense of balance - if you can.
