Thank you everyone for your good advise. I took it.

I got a 3 month old Black Astralorp, Black Mottled Java, Easter Egger, and a 2 month old Olive Egger.

He made a mistake when he told me he still had the speckle sussex which I wanted. Also wanted the Light Brahma but wasn't happy with how she looked. She was also very small and the only survivor out of 5.

I'll post a picture later.

Boy, there are a LOT of mean chickens out there!! The only roosters that I want are EE or an Orpington. Had my FILL of mean roosters, but Eva would kill one for me in the future if I accidentally raise one and it attacks me. @ninnymary, in the future I would go over to BackYardChickens and look for a breeder there to sell you what you want. People there sell/ship birds to each other all of the time. I would also use the Internet like a phone book and find a local-ish breeder. They are out there. I have transported chickens in dog crates, cat crates, big, cardboard boxes and also rabbit cages. I use those lightweight, cheapo exercise mats, the ones that hook together like a jigsaw puzzle, to line the crates for birds so that they don't slip. The lady that bought my 6 hens from in December, 2017 also sells ducks, pigs, goats and sheep. I can buy a "lamb", which is a sheep under 1 yo, for $500.00 I send her a check late summer/Fall, she transports the lamb to the local locker, I tell the locker what cuts I want, then I pick them up when ready. Many livestock owners will sell you from their supply.
You need to prepare ahead of time at home.
You should ALWAYS isolate your new livestock in case they harbor a disease. I Thought my new hens had lice, but they didn't. I had 6 of one flocks and 6 of another, so I mixed them up for a one week, then put them all into the same enclosure with the big coop.
You need to understand your livestock. For instance, it takes months to work a new horse into an established herd, some dogs will NOT EVER take to a new one, true of some cats as well, and, if you introduce one new hen into an established flock they will, most probably, kill her by tomorrow.

Thank you ducks but I'm not so new to raising chickens. Have had them for almost 10 years now though of course I'm not an expert. I know all about keeping them quarantine when you get new ones. I was already prepared for new ones.

Breeders are not a dime a dozen out here. Most I wouldn't even call breeders. They basically get chickes from hatcheries and raise them till they are 6-8 weeks and then sell them as pullets. I could have easily bought chicks at several places close by but I don't want to go that route anymore. I want them as close to point of lay as possible. There were some 2 hours away which was not a problem but the guy refused to tell me if I had the breeds I wanted. He wanted to give me his address so I could go see them. I wasn't going to waste a 2 hr. drive if he didn't have what I wanted. Another person was 3 years away. That was too far.

I’m out of chickens. I found most breeders about 1/2 con, 1/2 true. I’m speaking more of bantams. (I’m hesitant to pay breeder prices when I detect flaws.). They all want to talk about how “this bird” won county or local show. Big deal if you are 4H kid. Win Nationals, get back to me. Used to be a breeder of black Cochin bantams that won Nationals like he judged them. Couldn’t buy his birds... never knew him but knew his birds. They were excellent.

Your new birds look nice, Mary. Is the mostly black one the Java, and the silver one the EE?
I'm itching to get some more chickens but want to get the top of the chicken yard covered with wire first.

My FBCM rooster was a BEAST!!! But the hens were ok. I didn't like the feathered feet, just seemed that they would've been wet & cold all winter.
I have a cuckoo marans that lays nice dark eggs.
They start laying at the same age as any other 'heritage' breed - 4-6 months.

FBCM rooster ~ sister that's some pretty bad language ur using there ~ roosters can be mean ~ but ```
