Conformation is such a big part of chicken breed that a good judge should be able to tell the chicken breed just from seeing a black and white silhouette, at least the more common breeds.

My Black Australorp was yawning. I’ve had a pullet do this once and 2 weeks later it started crowing.
Please tell me she doesn’t look like a rooster. :( She’s about 3.5 months.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear Lol. The closest I can describe it is a yawn. Almost like one with the neck stretching out a little.

I’ve only seen this being done once and it turned out to be a rooster which I don’t want.

Look closely at the feathers around the base of the neck and just in front of the tail. If the feathers are uniformly round-ended all over the neck, then probably a hen. If they grow more pointed towards the base.. might be a roo.
Same with the feathers along the back.


As long as folks are getting into specifics and details... they are Marans. Fanciers will make a huge deal of pointing that out and will be sure to correct you if you don't include the S at the end (singular or plural - all are Marans). ;)

From pix, does look like a cockerel. Why I hate private poultry people. Maybe they didn’t know but usually they do and have NO problem getting rid of their problem onto somebody else....liars, cheats, and worse.....

Mary, can you take a shot of the head showing wattles and comb. Looking for both color and development. A close-up of saddle or hackle feathers could be informative as Cane said. He may be old enough for the sharp feathers to show up.

From posture and the curling tail feathers I think i might be a roo but lets look closer before panic sets in.
