Russ Crow's 2019 Bean Show Day #27

Utah Yellow Eye - Bush, Dry

I orignally had grown this bean back in the early 1980's in my early SSE days. Some member sent it to me and unfortunately I was not into record keeping in those days. I wish I had marked it down my source for every bean variety I had acquired in those days. I would love to know who sent the bean to me. I know the SSE seed historian would also like to know what my source was as I was the one and only person who donated the bean to their collection. I do remember the bean did not come from someone in Utah which stuck with me since the bean had Utah in it's name and it was not sent from there. Also not the west coast or the south. My sense even today was that someone from Colorado, Montana, Idaho vicinity sent me the bean. This yellow eye always in those days seemed to have a broader figure around the eye. The Maine Yellow eye has a much thinner figure like a soldier bean. I had inquired to the SSE seed historian this past January if SSE was ever going to list the bean in the winter yearbook. Then I could request a sample from their listing. They do listings just like any of the listed members do. She said no it will never be listed as they don't have a distribution packet made for it and have no plans to do so. She said though if I was interested in growing the bean she would check to see if they had enough seed inventory of this variety to give up some to me. They did and I got a nice size packet of these beans. I had grown only two of them this past summer in flower pots. Next year they will get a bigger planting. Both of the plants in the flower pots looked great and were growing nicely and both began to blossom in August. I watered them both the same amount and to the same frequency. However one of them just suddenly wilted and died shortly after blossoming began. Hope I don't find any more of that in 2020. The other plant produced about 40 seeds.

Veitch - Bush, Dry

I acquired this bean three years ago from a fellow in Belgium. I tried a small planting but they failed in 2017. I had sent a seed sample to a California grower that summer and got back a 60 seed sample of them later that year. I let them sit all during 2018 in a seed packet my basement as I had all my bean ground planed for other varieties. I finally got the chance to give them a try this year. They are and old European variety and it's my understanding they are a cross between some P. Vulgaris bean and a P. Coccineus one. Although they don't seem as productive as other varieties in my gardens. I love them for their color and pattern and will certainly grow them again. 10 plants gave me 6.75 ounces of new seed (191 grams).

Verde Temuco - Dry

The bean was sent to me by a fellow from Guthrie, Kentucky who told me they are daylength sensitive. I have grown them two years in a row and planted the beans newest production of seed. They have not produced an abundance of seed but I do get something each time. This fellow wants to see if we can get the bean to adapt to our long summer daylight hours. I wonder how long that will take. My personal feeling is that it will take a couple of centuries. It's a very pretty bean and I've gotten some nice quality seed from it. Supposed to be a climbing bean but so far has not climbed for me.

Vermont Mohawk - Pole, Dry

An authentic native variety. Large beans. This bean struggled terribly this summer. It didn't climb very much and looked like a bush bean for half the summer. Lot of it's see production was deformed, shrivelled and sunken in places over the seeds surface. My first grow out of the bean in 2016 was great. Total Seed Harvest which much of it I discarded was 11.65 ounces (330 grams)

Oak Grove - Pole, Dry

One of the many outcrossed beans sent by Will Bonsall Of Industry, Maine in 2015. I got around to doing a second grow out of this bean since 2015. It grew fairly well this summer and produced one off type that I named Lilac Grove. Total Seed Harvest Including Lilac Grove 9.40 ounces (2.66 grams)

I think someone asked the question about was I getting good seed returns. I can't find the post to quote the question. Anyway I have more specific answer today. We had 36 growers this year. If I add the growers who didn't return seed last year that were probably regrowing what they had asked to grow last year then the number is probably 42. The returns so far are 14 packages. There are three from outside the country that I think have been sent and I am waiting for the USDA in San Francisco to forward the packages to me.

Timberlane - Pole

Might be a snap bean. This is one of the outcrossed beans from Will Bonsall. Got seed back that looks like this and one off type. I didn't record the amound of seed. So it must have been a small amount. Second photo is the off type which I named Lawrence.

Muriel - Pole, Dry

Another outcross orignally sent by Will Bonsall in 2015. Very small amount of seed from this one this summer. I didn't even bother to record the amount. Another of the many stuggling beans. No off types from this bean.
