Tried to Like It

I can almost understand people not liking melons but ... @Pulsegleaner , @Dahlia 's brother, @Rhodie Ranch 's sister!!!

Bitter melon aside, I thought that a couple of the Asian melons that I tried were a big nuthin . I'll grow an early honeydew this year without a great deal of anticipation. Watermelon can be good but I've never grown a decent one.

When we were on the farm, Dad had a garden on the other side of the corrals. Mom was more "in command" of her boys but Dad may have been trying to do most ALL himself. He said, "this year, you can have a garden but I'm not going to." Mom says, "Okay, but bring it up here closer to the house." So, he plowed up an area just past our little guest house.

Mom planted some things, mostly cantaloupe, that first year. After that, it was all cantaloupe . This was okay with me. Personally, I thought that I had been working too hard in Dad's garden. Vines are hard to weed and that was an excuse not to be too vigilant in there with the hoe. My belt buckle made a good scoop and an okay knife.

What does your belt buckle have to do with anything?? Well, I could "steal" a melon, carry it out past the irrigation ditch, park myself amongst the blackberry vines, and EAT that melon! I'm sure that Mom knew that I was making off with a melon now and then and didn't mind at all .

Maybe some day there will be an early maturing Crenshaw melon. Those were special treats!

@digitS' She definitely knew. My son sneaks out to the garden and browses there. Mysteriously, the "eyes in the back of my head" know the second he's sneaking screen time or candy, but is blind to vegetable looting.

I know that those genealogy dna tests you can have done tell you weather or not you will like cilantro. Not sure why but have heard it is accurate. Neither I or DW will eat it and it tastes like soap to us also.

Wouldn't it be easier to just taste it instead of having a DNA test? haha

Maybe it's the texture.
My mom baked it with butter and brown sugar and I ate that molecular layer off easily and hoped to be done but mom was a stickler for eating what you were served. It was a tragic scene. Little girl and enormous piece of squash that never got smaller no matter how many bites I took.

I do think I like it as pie tho!

My mom left me at the table with food on my plate I didn’t like. I looked around to make sure no one was watching, and put it back in the bowl. LOL

My list of produce I do not like

:kale
:Collard
:Okra, never tried
:Chard. Never tried
:Eggplant, need to try different recipes
:Winter squash, some I do like but mostly no. Need to try other ways to prepare.

:bananas, they are gross
:avocado
:apricot
I do like a few of these items prepared certain ways, but mostly no thanks to the lot of them.

My mom tried this a few times. She would check the trash and put the dog on the porch so I couldn’t get rid of it. She never did get me eat any of it

Apricots, @Collector ?

How about apricot jam? If you like the flavor ...

Apricots have a heavy skin and they should be treated the same as lots of fruit - peeled. Ya know, I though as a kid that I didn't like apples. It was a strange idea because I liked apple pie. Now, I always peel apples and eat plenty of them. (The new SugarBee 🐝 is a real tasty variety!)

DW is the same way. She would eat only a couple varieties of apple, because she didn't like tough skins - and didn't like having to wash off anything which might have been sprayed on them. Then out of curiosity, I tried a hand-cranked corer/peeler that had been given as a gift years ago, and never used; it peels, cores... and slices! DW & I both love them that way, and now I'm getting my apple a day & a little arm exercise.

On the topic of melons... I love a good watermelon, and grow a few each year. But the odd thing is that after eating the first one, I lose my appetite for eating another one any time soon. Once I realized that (when most of the watermelons one year were spoiling) I started giving them away, or making juice for jelly (or to freeze for winter). If this year's crop does better than last year's, I'll try canning some watermelon juice.
