My blackberry "adventures" continue

It was bad enough when the deer got the blackberries. At least they left me the blackberry bushes.

Enter my grandson who decided to be helpful and, without my even having to ask, took the string trimmer and trimmed the bases of all the trees around my garden. Everything looks spiffy. Except for one SMALL problem. He thought the berry bushes growing along the fence line were actually weeds and.....(gulp)....he cut them all down right to the ground! :mow

Does anybody know if they will grow back?

here in the Pacific NW the more you wack down...stomp.. burn and generally abuse the blackberries the more they produce!!!

I am not sure about where you live but brambles are very hardy plants I would not worry too much

OH I hope you are right! They were the only things in this year's garden that were doing really great. Even my strawberries are not making it--again! But the blackberries produced a nice crop--for the deer.

;)

I'm so sorry about your blackberry bushes but I'm pretty sure they will come back even stronger by next year. I have been trying to get rid of a lot of mine -- they had taken over 50% of my garden. I dug them out but they still keep creeping up again. I love the taste of them but as the countryside around me is full of them I really don't need them inside my garden.

It is also hard when a friend or relative does their best to help.......... :barnie & gets it wrong!

Oh, that stinks. I really agree that they will come back hardier than ever, assuming there is a little life left at the base. It reminds me of the time I weeded out all of my mom's raspberry transplants :(

As for the deer, have you tried tying Irish Spring soap in your trees in nylons and/or shaving it around the base and in your berry beds? It REALLY WORKS! We have used it for years now on our fruit trees and tried it for the first time shaved in my bean rows, which the deer had been chomping off.

They will DEFINITELY grow back... and probably stronger than before. Blackberry bushes are indestructible! :)

I agree, the more you abuse a blackberry plant, the better and faster it grows, whether you want it to or not. :p
