I worry that my poor chickens are not drinking enough water in this heat wave, perching with their beaks open, so I carry a bowl of water around to offer each one (yes, time consuming). Some still won't drink enough. Today I cooked some purple hull peas, and served them the leftover juice; not being into the cornbread dunking thing myself. They absolutely loved it, and are now quite hydrated.

I like the cornbread with it myself, but that was a great treat for them.

If I am every truely worried about them not getting enough to drink I will take a bowl of cool water and throw a handful of fresh or frozen - never canned) peas in it and take it to the coop. They can't help but chase the peas and usually drink most of the water while they are at it.

I do the same thing for my chickens. Always with pees since I buy huge bags for the ducks. I also will give them left over mellon to help cool then down and hydrate them.

I just use the peas cause they float so it is easier for them to be interested and chase them.

If you get a fogging nozzle for your hose you can give them a fine spray. Chickens hate a coarse spraying with water but they love a fog spray. It acts like a swamp cooler to lower the temp and doesn't put out enough water to flood anything.
