Raining on my hay %&*#

I went down this morning and paid $21 for a bale of rabbit hay. Put it out on the patio and then came inside. I just realized it's RAINING out there. I dragged it into the garage and hope it didn't get wet enough to mold. If it did I just bought some expensive mulch. Who looks for rain in San Diego this late in the season?

Wow, that's some expensive hay. (The pony eats 20 lbs a day, he would have to go on a diet at those prices! I think $11.50 is bad enough for orchard grass/alfalfa or timothy/alfalfa.) -Wendy

I could get bermuda a lot cheaper but I have enough bermuda problems without bringing in more seeds.

Supposed to rain in the mountains here outside of San Diego tonight hoodat. Not sure at this point if its a mixed blessing, I just put the weeds to bed for the season and do not need any help watering them.

Wow Hoodat! Was that alfalfa, or something baled specifically for rabbits? I think the most I paid for horse hay when I lived in Alpine was $11. And that hurt.

What in the world do they raise for rabbit hay? $21.per bale ouch!!

That was a tight 3 string bale. It contains almost twice as much as a 2 string bale. One man can't lift it onto a truck.

That brings it down to around the equivelent of $7.00 per bale.... makes sence now. :0

If it was baled tight and if you hadn't popped it yet it will almost certainly be fine. I'd get it up on a pallet if you haven't already, and go ahead and pop it so it can dry.

It never fails to rain the day after I buy a truckload of hay. Never. :rolleyes:

Hay prices west of the Rockies are pretty extreme compared to the midwest. I am currently paying $15 a bale for last year's alfalfa, 3 string bales that are about 100 pounds. I use almost two a week, not to mention about 25 pounds of grain a week at an average of $11 a bag. Currently in Wyoming, alfalfa hay is selling for $30 a ton...I really need to live somewhere with water and grass, ouch.
