Yes it is nerve-wracking this year. I’ve been waiting to plant my bean starts as it’s been so cold here. We had +2C overnight temps the last two nights with daytime temps under 18C. It’s a cold spring!

Oh gosh now I’m really nervous! I’ve had phenomenal success with beans every year, no insect issues, no disease… the only time I failed to get seed was when I tried beans that were too long season for me. So I guess I just assumed I’d be successful. Fingers crossed!

Wait, are we not supposed to plant all the network beans? Do you only plant 4 seeds usually due to lack of space? Or hold some back in case something takes out the first batch? I didn’t think of that possibility…

Who am I kidding? I love them all. I’m up to 115 varieties and still lusting after new ones, lol.

Ooh they are pretty but Tunny catches my eye. I love beans that are half and half without speckles or stripes.

Up til now it’s probably 7 or 8 per year but we are adding a whole new section of gardens this spring so I’m hoping to grow out around 20? We will have to see if we can get it all done and ready in time for planting.

I’m excited too, @heirloomgal - I got my package from Guy Dirix today. Sixteen new varieties I chose, plus he threw in 5 more! Now to get them all added to my spreadsheet and decide which beans to grow this year. Such lovely beans!

@Bluejay77 I have just ordered Fat Man Buff from Guy Dirix - is that the same as Fat Man? If so, I could grow them out and share this fall. Assuming they make it through Customs… fingers crossed.

I use those yellow sticky strips in each pot, it takes a bit of time but it works.

It really is. Last spring we went 2 months (April/May/into June) with no rain and we had had minimal snow last winter. This is part of why we had such an intense fire season.

@Bluejay77 @heirloomgal I have some Bird Egg Blue beans I got in 2021, and I have them listed as 110 days to maturity, which is doable here. Do you think it is actually longer than that? I haven't grown them out yet but I hate the thought of having to pre-start and transplant. I do so many...

Yes, I love Heritage Harvest! They are in Manitoba, and very similar temps to me but they get more rain. I am in a dry spot, with just a bit more annual rainfall than Arizona, in the US. Ya know, I am still building my collection of heirloom beans (a paltry 85 varieties at this point) so maybe...

I was just browsing (procrastinating on some boring work I have to do, actually) and came across your list. I must have 30 varieties of peppers in my seed box and not a single one in common with yours! It amazes me how many different varieties are actually out there compared to a typical seed...

Ok, I searched out Mr. Dirix and found his listings for 2024…amazing! I’ve never ordered seed from Europe though- is it something you have to arrange through Canada customs in some way?

So I had a number of podsworth of not quite mature or misshapen Graines de Cafe, definitely not keepers. So today I boiled them and made a quick “baked” beans recipe on the stove and they were delicious! I’m quite pleased with this bean and I’ll grow it again for sure.

I’m taking notes on the pics I like so I know what to look for this winter :)
