When my husband was alive and we were on the farm I kept all my feed in dead chest freezers. We removed the motor, sealed the drain and put a paddlock on so that if any of the animals (particularly my Haflinger, the little devil) got loose, they couldn't nose the lid open.

Can you put some of your plants in hanging baskets hung from the ceiling? Then all your plants will have enough room to get to their full size. For plants for east facing positions, anything that likes part sun should do fine.

It was the same for me !! I thought the root trainers were a great invention but I couldn't find them reasonably priced either. So, I just bought 5" deep pots to use for potting up after the seedlings outgrow their " baby pots " . They don't have grooves inside to help the roots grow downward...
