Progress report: All beans were planted 4/18. The Imbotyi Mbayiyana and Zambezi #2 are coming up well. The Red Speckled Sugar Bean is showing no sign of sprouting. How long before I should declare defeat on this one? I'd be glad to plant another in its place if it doesn't grow. Thanks!

@flowerweaver Magentaspreen sounds very interesting. Do you think there would be a nuisance problem with reseeding in an area with more rainfall, and presumably greater germination, than your area? Of course, if the deer like it, we probably wouldn't have a problem...

@flowerweaver That is beautiful! I might see if I can rig something with my leftover bamboo pieces. ( I also made several bamboo teepees.) Zip ties are my subsitute for duct tape, they solve almost every problem.

How do you use fence posts for trellises? I found some at mom's house, confiscated an area next to our driveway, hammered them in about 3' apart (as I read that @Bluejay77 did), and planted my excess KY wonder beans around them. But it isn't clear to me from the pictures if I need to add twine...

Thanks for the info. We have sandy soil, but do run a sprinkler every few days,and iirc, every day last summer. My ordinary beans (that I soaked for nothing :)) have sprouted, so I believe the soil moisture is at a good level.

Ok - we have very sandy soil, but have a sprinkler timed to go off every few days. It sounds like that should be enough. I did plant beans last year successfully, but I want to make sure to do everything exactly right because I can't just go to Lowe's and buy more of the ones you sent. Thanks!

I've been reading the prior years' Easy Bean threads and have learned that beans shouldn't be soaked before planting as it might kill the seed. Would it be helpful to wrap them in wet paper towels for a day before planting? My gardening experience is limited to what I remember my Dad doing...

Thank you both. I am interested in learning from you guys and so, am reading through the previous two bean threads. Funny, I was raised on a farm & picking beans (as well as snapping or shelling) was the worst torture I could imagine!
