Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

@Carol Dee , I think that gardeners in general are missing out by paying too little attention to growing Strawflowers. They are charming AND colorful AND can last for years as a dried flower. Steve

    Your Summer Greens

The flowering tops are from the last of the bok choy, not really a Summer green – they will be back in the Fall from new plants. Clockwise, amaranth, nice and young and tender, from direct sowing and volunteers ;). Top are kale leaves "nice and young and tender," from new starts in 2024. Greens!

    What did You do Right?

It was a good idea for me to have peppers in the little south bed in the greenhouse again. They were  surplus seedlings several years ago but they will be our mainstay peppers for 2024. The open garden peppers are an embarrassment. It isn't clear to me why they have had such a difficult start...

    Your Summer Greens

We have amaranth, with more on the way. With some tolerance for them flowering and self-seeding, they provide volunteers during a following year. Appreciated (altho the term "greens" may not apply since they are so purply red ;)). Broccoli must fit the definition. This is the first year in many...

    Coffee

Good Morning. Breakfast, banana pancakes and mango slices with oolong. Going tropical ;). The heat has improved towards more tolerable. It was 57⁰f (14⁰C) at sunrise. The haze predicted wasn't really visible but the air quality monitors tell us "moderate" has replaced good. Wildfire smoke, of...

sniff ... sneeze ... sniff ... blooooww ... sniff ... Good Heavens. The nose is absolutely in torment! Record high temperature but 11% humidity? Beezy today, heaven knows what is blowing around. I have gone to allergy eye drops – that helps. Allergy pill ... will rinse out nose. Coffee soon...

    Garden Flowers

"The garden pansy (Viola × wittrockiana) is a type of polychromatic large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower.[2] It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium ("the pansies")[3] of the genus Viola, particularly V. tricolor..." I have learned something! This is what I think of as a Johnny Jump Up: Maybe a little more blue than purple ... Now, I'm seeing some photos of no blue or no purple! Cross? Some violas cross naturally within and beyond their own species!

    Your Summer Greens

Green Light — Off We Go! First of all, are you someone who likes greens? Spring greens! But, then dry, hot Summer and many plants respond by bolting to seed. Their life cycle is completed; to sow seeds during these months is often a futile experience. I have tried with only moderate success...

    Garden Flowers

More volunteers (for @Dahlia and @Blueberry Acres and maybe @Pulsegleaner can share some thoughts on the final picture). Perhaps, this is a good environment for some of the violets and this location doesn't surprise me for a volunteer since pots with pansies are close by most years. Yes...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

Yeah well, nuthin'. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be record setting heat 🥵. Yesterday's high was a record. I will share some progress that the warm-season plants have made. ▪︎ I wasn't sure if I could claim that the sweetcorn was knee high on the 4th of July but it certainly is now...
