I ended up canning 3 1/4 quarts of tomatoes yesterday. We STILL have a frost warning for early Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. I will harvest today or tomorrow and bring in nice and big green tomatoes to ripen inside, like I do every year. I have canned about 10 quarts of tomatoes this year, I...

No, if your jar is clean you won't grow bacteria in it. The idea was to put this out in the sun on a HOT day, and let it steep the tea bags for several hours. Just like a car gets super hot when in the summer sun, so the water in the sun tea jar gets that hot, too. I just never really used my...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

Our average frost is on the 24th, but we have had snow on October 11th before. I suspect that it's all due to the Canadian low that has kept us in a mini drought, with virtually no cloud cover for the past few weeks. Gonna move some plants inside today, and then on Monday, since my yearly Salsa...

Last week I stocked up on all purpose flour. WM had 5 pounds/~$5, so I bought 10 pounds, 25 pounds wasn't an option, as it had been in past years. I repackaged from the paper and labeled with the expiration date. The one container with 2 expiration dates lives upstairs in the cupboard with a...

I powered through and gardened today. We are getting a frost next Tuesday night, so I pruned up my tomatoes so that they will focus only on the fruit. Where there were small tomatoes on a vine that has produced really big ones, I got them off, too--too little, too late. I also watered my...

Is my crabapple tree dead? It is, isn't it?

Have you had cyclical drought? We have and the experts here in Central IL are blaming tree deaths on recurring drought. I lost one of my Mortmorency Cherries last winter and the surviving one dropped almost all of it's leaves this August. I put a soaker hose on it and I have used my cistern...

One more hurdle jumped--physical went well. Dr. suggested all is clear for my knee operation, as long as the lab work looks ok, which I'm pretty sure it will, since the last lab work looked good. That will be next Friday.

    Artifacts, found in Your Garden

i am getting sad reading these old threads bc there are members who have dropped out but they posted on these threads. Prairie Rose lives only a couple of hrs from me, and we used to share threads a few years ago. Same with Thistlebloom. :hit

    Coffee

I understand that even the experts cannot tell the difference between pure vanilla, made from the beans and artificial vanilla--BIG difference in price. Go for it. In Fact, many cooks who want the real thing go for vanilla paste and not the vodka based liquid. Just sayin....guess vanilla is on...

    CC's Fruits, Veggies & Food 2023

This caught MY eye bc I have volunteer very Tall goldenrod growing amongst some burdock, but it can be harvested. I might try that, decorate with it and then see what to do after that. I might try harvesting the seeds and replant in some other places on the property...

I am learning how to grow cucumbers. In the past few years I grew them along a fence in a very fertile bed and had no problems, maybe I planted too close I guess. This year am experiencing yellowing leaves and I suspect it is the fertility of the soil in this new spot...

Finally, I put away the "Waterless Amaryllis", the correct way, knocking off all of the soil, placing the pot on it's side in the basement, dry, dark and cool, and counting 10 weeks to start over again. Still "wick" as they say... If you remember this was a Christmas present, glued to a board...

Middle DD is weakening. I have been telling her to buy a big freezer and I think that she and SIL are considering giving up some eating out and playdates to do so. I think that Longshoreman's strike and the prospect of 2021 shortages and everything more expensive has swayed them. I suggested...

    Dehydrating Herbs

I was working in my basement pantry (which is a small room, really) and discovered that I had naturally dehydrated two pie pumpkins. Reminds me of finding a dead critter all dried out and flat in the barn, under something.
