it wasn't that bad. the wind had mostly calmed down and it had blown most of the snow away so i only had about a half hour of shovelling to. i also went around and looked for mouse tracks but did not see any.
cold, windy and snowy this evening. a few inches of snow in the forecast. 20F and breezy... glad i'm in here and not out there... :) will probably have to do some shovelling tomorrow morning. :( i don't dislike doing it, but i much prefer to not do it in the morning and also after the...
if you have stem that looks like that you then you will also have nodes (where each leaf comes out), so it should not matter where you cut it as long as you get a big enough piece.
it looks like you have several feet of stem there to work with. you could take chunks of them both and try to get...
if heat and drought are an issue raised beds are not probably going to help without the added complications of needing more water or an irrigation system. :(
i have been able to mostly avoid sprays of any kind here for the past 20 years or so. if it comes down to bugs ruining crops or spraying i'll just plant other things as there are a lot of other garden plants that you can try out.
unfortunately Mom will still use sprays but i've told her that...
there can still be some about on the warmer days.
when i got up and went outside today to take out the trash the sky was full of bright stars. it had been some time since i'd been able to see them and a much longer time since i'd actually been outside at night to look. such a beautiful world...
in a different world perhaps. :) none of those are acceptable to Mom so they must go... and i don't really like the looks of chickweeds in general, they are a pain in the butt if you are trying to keep some creeping thymes looking nice.
remember every day when you wake up flat that you are a protoplasmic bean who seeks it's own level - grabbity always wins. then you have muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons to lever that protoplasm around. it is all controlled by hormones and fats are an important part of that along with the...
yes, and if you used certain kinds of fertilizers in the holes or in that area it may be why the skunk went after the bulbs. we do have skunks that come through here and at one time had plenty of tulips planted along various edges but the skunks did not bother them. we planted them deep enough...
i think that is a reference to when you have a lot of seedlings started in the same cell so that you have a clump of seedlings going and you need to break them gently apart to replant them. pricking is the term i've heard for that process using something small and pointy. i hope this is what...
finished the bag o' beans shelling this evening. that was much more fun and interesting even if most of the beans were Purple Dove. they come out of the shell so easy it is not much trouble at all to shell them, they were in better condition and a lot more than the previous bag so i was happy...
i'm continuing to chip away at the bean shelling but i also need to work on some other projects and chores so it is not going as fast as i'd like.
the bag of beans i'd finished yesterday was really a disappointment, but the garden those pods came from was the worst. glad to say that the next...
p.s. it is a really bad idea to dump used engine oils and other fluids on the ground. most car repair places that do oil changes will take that oil and recycle it.
if you put the bones through the compost pile you probably won't have much of an issue with animals digging them up after.
around here because of the mostly clay soil it is very rare that anything i bury gets disturbed and we have a resident population of raccoons that sniff out about anything...
high heat and droughts are tough on them up here i can't imagine it will be easy to keep them alive down there, but i hope you can find some that will survive. :)
we have a little bit of snow on the ground today. not sure if we're going to get much more or not. forecast doesn't specify so i would think not much. coolest night forecast is Thursday evening with 16F. some days over freezing. in other words, pretty much normal...
