My white onions which I wont harvest until fall are starting to push up and are showing above the soil line. Should I cover these with dirt? Many Thanks
Deer will stand on their hind legs to eat from fruit trees. They probably wouldnt reach anything over 6 ft off the ground. I can see where deer will eat EVERYTHING they can reach.
I planted on memorial day. They grew well. I didint harvest until this week. So maybe I should just shorten the time between planting and harvest? I just wondered if the fatness made them woody or lessened their flavor? I think I like carrots cuz I can harvest on my own schedule and not be...
Ive got enough yard (about an acre) to raise some little critters. Does anyone have any opinions and preferences on which to raise, chickens or rabbits? Which is tastier to eat? Easier to butcher? Less fussy to keep , feed, bed and raise? Being in Wisconsin we have some nasty winters so I...
I had a good harvest of carrots this year. Today, wife and I canned 21 quarts (3 batches) in our new presto pressure canner which we bought for $80. Anyway, I dont recall which variety of carrot we have, they were supposed to be long and slender but a lot of the carrots are almost 2 inches...
I started harvesting carrots for freezing. Is it better if I wait til october (zone 4) I just thought if I wait then they get tougher or more starchy. Thanks.
Well, I am in zone 4 too, Wisconsin. Overall, it hasnt been too hot and dry here, but the past 3 weeks been 80s and a few 90s. Next year I will have to try a different brand, could be the breed. So, if my first frost is around October 1 then maybe I can plant some on July 1 and hope for a...
This year I planted Sugar Daddy Peas from Burpee. The plants look healthy but the pods are weird. I get a lot of pods that are fat and short with 1-3 fat, mature peas. Other pods look plump, thick and mature but the peas inside are not mature. I have yet to find the classic, well formed pods...
Another question. It is hard to tell this from your pictures. This year Ive planted my peas in double rows 6 inches apart. Should I plant the double rows and put one fence down the middle OR plant single rows (how far apart?) and use one fence for each row? Carol Dee, it looks like you use...
Last year I used nylon string for the pea trellis. This year I use jute string. Both of these sag too much and are mostly useless imo. Does anyone have any good ideas for supporting peas. I suppose I could support the string aver 4-6 feet with little stakes but other ideas I will consider...
Living in Wisconsin we have a frost danger til late May. If I want to plant tomatoes in garden about May 20 then when should I start my tomatoes seeds indoors. I want to give the 'maters a head start but I dont want them so big like bushes in my kitchen. Maybe about 8 inches tall at time of...
Wow! I came here today to post a thread to inquire about peoples favorite bean to grow and eat. I guess you all did it for me. Blue Lake? Hmm. I grew that one last year. It was easy and delicious.
Can anyone mention more of their favorites. I live in Wisconsin, zone 4. Thanks
Also, what is a...
I bought my tomatoe seeds last week at the farm store. I got Black Russian (Black Krim), Abraham Lincoln and Cherokee Purple. I dont know anything about these except that theyre heirlooms. I am not even much of a tomatoe lover but hope to enjoy these one way or another. The rest of our garden...
Hi, My first 2 years of gardening I planted set onions and they did not grow very large. I think that they did not even grow 50% larger. I do not fertilize but that didnt stop my other vegys from growing well. Any tips on how to improve my yield of onions.? My soil is a clay loam in Wisconsin...
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like "everything in moderation" might be the simplest approach here. Put some ashes in the garden and throw the rest elsewhere, at least until I get around to doing a pH test.
