    What is this?

haha, yep, you may get inedible and decorative or very good and worth saving the seeds. you won't know until later though. let them ripen fully if you want the seeds.

    stubbed toes and mud pies

still have to pick off Japanese Beetles every day. if i skip a day or two the damage can get pretty bad on some plants. always interesting how they favor certain varieties over those right next to them. they mostly ignore lima beans almost completely so far. it is more JBs than i've had in...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

interesting! Mom would never try something like that, i'd try it once to see if i liked it as i don't usually mind strong flavors. is it comparable to grapefruit? i had a bite of broccoli yesterday that was very bitter. no, i didn't particularly like it but i figure when i cook it that it...

    Covid

a healthy person only needs so many minutes a day of direct sunlight to generate vitamin D but it does vary based upon skin color and time of day. i have a lot of skin issues so i do not go out in direct sunlight often, but i try to get some sunshine on my skin when i go out. i just make sure...

    Tomatoes 2020

look for tomato varieties that will do ok in containers. i think they are commonly called patio tomatoes, but i'll leave it to the experts to talk about those as we've never done much in containers with tomatoes here. :) but good luck when you do it. :)

    Slugs

encourage frogs, toads, snakes, raccoons, etc. all of these will happily eat slugs and snails if they can find them. and birds too for sure... the border around our gardens is crushed rinsed limestone and we rarely have slug issues in most of the gardens. the board trick is what i use when i...

    Cosmo spring garden 2020

if the weather is nice enough and the vine is still putting nourishment into the fruit then i want to leave them be as much as i can. once the vine looks like it is starting to die off then we pick them (leaving some of the stem on) and put them in the garage to cure. spaced out so they are...

i'm ready to have some melon, but i think it will be a bit longer yet. :) will definitely keep an eye on them. from what i am reading people say to pick them when they start turning yellow. from what i've seen of pictures some people pick them a lot later than that. given that we may have a...

figure roughly the size of the plant above ground is balanced by the roots below. this is not absolutely true because of different soil conditions, but normally a reasonable first estimate.

    just checking in

i thought the exhaust port should go towards the back... :) sorry to hear about it being painful still, but bouncing around in a truck is probably not a good way to test it out. i have to admit i'm envious of the dual purpose flotation device.

    stubbed toes and mud pies

in wandering around and taking some pictures today i was glad to see yet more than just the one hubbard squash out there @digitS'! :) :) :) yes, it does make me happy to see a baby squash less than the size of a grapefruit starting to form right next to the monster that is already mostly there...

@ninnymary here's a pic of a nice spot in one of the two melon patches. i was worried we weren't going to get very many melons but this picture shows you that's not going to be an issue this year... :) :) :) there's at least four melons just right there and i'm pretty sure a few others in that...

    stubbed toes and mud pies

@Ridgerunner i prefer to store the jars with the rings on like you say to protect against chipping or cracking as we do stack cases on top of each other (with cardboard layers in between to provide some cushion). we always wash empty jars well before putting them in storage (and also turn them...
