We just had a good snow storm, it dropped about 6 inches. Fluffy though... which is a good thing, because through a perfect storm of bad circumstances, I had to shovel 4 other homes besides my own. My daughter's (which is up for sale), my Mother's two properties (also up for sale) and the home...
I would only add carambola (star fruit) to that list. That is another great tropical juice fruit. I enjoyed that when visiting places in the Pacific. Hard to find good carambola here, they are very tender & don't ship well, so most of those I've seen here were picked & shipped green.
The entire squash is used as the seed; so the bigger the squash, the better. You can often find them in Asian or Hispanic markets (that's where I get mine here). But if you can find a local gardener who grows them, that might be better, since their squashes may be more mature than those grown...
I lived & gardened in both San Diego, and in San Jose. It was possible to garden year-round in both locations. It was in San Jose that I learned about chayote, UC Davis was promoting it & offered detailed instructions on its culture. I obtained my first start (which is a whole mature fruit which...
Chayote is much like a very firm, sweeter zicchini. I like it cubed & cooked alone as a side dish; but IMO it is best added to soups & stews. The single very large seed in the center is basically like a giant pumpkin seed, and is edible too. Once established, the tender vine tips can also be...
I've long been considering a glass greenhouse too. It would stand up better to strong winds (which blow out some of the plastic panels nearly every year). But given that I've had to replace my roof twice since 2000 due to hail, that may just be trading one problem for another.
What I could...
Came across this member of the bean family while browsing. I've never seen anything that made me long more to live in a tropical climate. Well, except for mangoes. :drool
Ice cream bean
Beans really are the magical fruit.
We were hanging around 0 degrees for a couple days. The basement wood burner is ducted into the HVAC, so I stayed home & stoked the wood burner all day. That ash wood I dragged in all Summer pays for itself on the coldest days, it takes a lot of stress off the gas furnace. Nice to have a backup...
Late to this thread, so a belated Welcome @Jae ! I'm another big advocate & practitioner of soil/soul therapy, as part of grief management.
BUT...
You have NO idea what you would be getting into! There are so many generous bean growers here, you'd need a bigger mail box.
There are a lot of reasons to have a vegetable garden, with nutrition being just one of them. There is much to be said about growing the vegetables & varieties we choose, controlling what is - and is not - in them, and consuming them at peak flavor fresh from the garden.
But please forgive me...
