Mid-January, and a couple of Siracha plants that are growing outdoors under cover are still ripening fruit. I picked all of these a couple of days ago. That was a welcome development, but it's not at all typical for our area. We're having an unusually warm, wet winter this year.
Over the...
In the past I attempted to save seed from basil, but the very few little black dots that I ended up with never germinated. Is it supposed to be this tricky to collect basil seed, or are we doing something wrong? 🤔
This year I hope to try again, primarily because I think I may have a cross in...
We took a walk this afternoon, and were reminded of the beauty of nature just five minutes from our house. This photo is of a nearby ravine with a creek running through it; the sound of the water rushing over the rocks can be so soothing.
I do not recall any bitterness with Italienischer, however I do recall the flavour being noteworthy and pleasant. The form of this lettuce is similar to a robust Romaine crossed with a sword-leaf form, and they grow absolutely huge. It was a real conversation piece in our garden.
Summer heat...
Math is vital. One of the pubs that we visit for Happy Hour offers beer at what appears to be a reduced price, but that in fact cost more per ounce than their regular priced beverages. So we always order the regular ones. Every penny counts. ;)
And I have grown both the Italianischer and Yugoslavian Red lettuce! Lol. Fedco suggests giving the Italianischer more room that what you would typically offer and that is sage advice; it is a massive and incredibly tasty lettuce. The Yugoslavian Red has a beautiful green core, and its unique...
Amaryllis are so beautiful, yet they have been a challenge to keep in our house due to fungus gnat infestations. Is there a special potting mix you use with them to limit insect activity??
I also like to reuse what some might consider 'garbage' items for practical applications. They cost nothing, they serve a purpose, and it delays their entry to the landfill. Very creative use of materials Baymule. 👍
Evidently it was a brilliant 'sunny' day today-- but we were socked in with fog all day instead. No sunshine to be seen. Kind of cold and clammy instead. I'm feeling kind of ripped off. Lol. 😂
We are sauteing the filling for beef and Bean burritos, with homegrown garlic, Siracha peppers, and a ragtag mix of dry beans. Once the filling cools we'll stir in grated cheese, and then fold up bundles of yumminess in large tortillas. The burritos freeze really well, for homemade fast food.
Yesterday I harvested 5 peppers from our friend's unheated hoop house. The smallest is an Omarsko Kambe, and the others are likely Lesya peppers (no tag, so not sure about that). I am curious to know whether these plants may have developed some cold-tolerance after having lived outdoors right...
Here we go again-- a new year, and a new season of growing ranunculus. The corms that I planted last spring multiplied exponentially, so now there are lots of extras to experiment with. This year I am starting some several weeks earlier than in past years, and instead of placing them in...
I dug up a clump of dahlias in November, and am trying a new method of storing the tubers refrigerated in plastic. I placed the bag in a lidded glass casserole dish for extra protection. It's only been a month-- but so far so good. 😊
