I got a Nor-pro Sauce Master that sounds like your Squeezo, Ridgerunner. The cost was about $45 at my local Amish supply store, a little more on-line. I got additional strainer heads for finer seeds or larger sized pulp. It has been a great time saver.
8 more jars of tomato sauce, 12 jars of sweet hots -- mixed peppers in a sweet brine -- and today, 8 pints of figs. I also figure I have dried about $150 worth of dried tomatos (about a pound and a half.) If you use sun-dried tomatos in recipes, you can save a ton by drying them yourself.
Grow vertically! I use my trusty bamboo to make a 4-post teepee, put scraps of fencing on 2 sides and wind string around. The cukes grow up and take less space. I have planted lettuce and radishes underneath in the early season, before the cukes are covering the teepee. I use a 3 x 3 ' space to...
What's the mixture/recipe for the tub cleanser? I'm ready to try it!
I just got my dehydrator out yesterday. I'm using it to dry tomatos. (Sliced the cherry tomatos in half.) I have several recipes that call for sun-dried tomatos, and they are very expensive. I realized that making them was a...
I used the pumpkin screen with my Norpro yesterday. Some seeds came through, but I was still happy with the results. I clamped the mill to my kitchen table instead of the kitchen counter, lowering it a few inches and it was much easier to crank. I processed 2 5 gallon buckets plus some, very...
Don't get me started!!! Scented products including cleansers, candles, plug-in or other air fresheners are all chemicals we are much better to do without. There is a higher incidence of allergies and asthma in homes where scented products are used.
If you want a clean, freshsmell, open a...
I made sure to fully use my garden space this year -- as soon as any planting was past its time, up it came and new seeds or plants went in.
My seeds are going into use, not sitting in the garden shed, and I'm getting more from the garden.
We eat based on what needs to be eaten -- what's in...
This may be too late! I just saw your post. I got a Norpro Sauce Master and am very pleased with the sauce results. It is a little tricky getting it clamped to my counter, but it separates seeds/skin from pulp well. You will develop muscles crankling it!!!!
I will be using it tomorrow with the...
I have usually processed my tomatos for sauce in the blender but a friend recommended a Victoria tomato processor -- the kind that works kind of like a sausage grinder. You put tomatos in the top, turn a crank, and the mill separates the seeds/skin from the pulp/juice. There are attachments so...
I have grown orchids for many yeard -- used to belong to a local orchid club, but got too busy and now just care for my own.
RE: Mix Buy a bag each of cocoa bark, real charcoal, and perlite or Pro mix. Mix these in roughly equal parts for potting most orchids.
Most importantly, as soon as...
This heat wave is so wonderful!!! It has saved me so much time -- my onions cooked in the ground!
Any other timesaving benefits you'd care to add? (LOL)
I saved the seeds as well and have several of the plants growing well in my garden, full of clusters of fruit. They seem to be very prolific and tolerant of the heat. I also am growing Kumato tomatos -- as found in Trader Joes. My search of Campari classified it as a "club" tomato in that the...
The hydroponic plantsa are beautiful! Wonder how they'd do in a cold frame in winter????
Here was my first big harvest about a fifth of the row. I put up eight jars of pickled beets in addition to eating a ton of them fresh! And more beets on the way. There are 5 varieties here, but Torpedo and...
Tattler lids are on sale, sort of! The site has free shippings, and is bundling sets of 3 dozen lids at a reduced price. The time is limited. They have bulk sales now too -- find some friends and split a bulk purchase!
I am changing my mind about the amaranth -- I did look up how to eat them on the net, and there are lots of ways... I've been adding the leaves to stir fries or any other situation where spinach is called for. The stems are like a cross between asparagus and celery when cooked. I'm now waiting...
I know by now that you really must soak the seeds for 24 hours in water before planting. I have let the seed go 2 days with no loss of results. Then, water every day!!!! I was out there faithfully spraying down my beet row this year. In prior years, when I was not so vigilant and did not have...
Eat more kale! This is the tee-shirt slogan that got a New England grower in trouble with Chick-filet!
Kale is great. I grow Scotch Curled and Russian (red jack) Kale and we eat them more than weekly. You can make kale chips, add to soups and beans, steam and eat as a green, the list goes on...
Yikes! Mowing my grass tonight I noted that there is a 10' x 10' section that has been taken over by yarrow, maybe more.
I'd have to add veronica to the list. That small mound in the big flower bed has become a huge area of new plants.......
Rattlesnake master is also sprouting in weird...
Yeah!!!!! I am harvesting beets!!!!!
I am pulling in the thickest areas (I didn't thin one row, as some of you said it didn't matter). I can say that I really like the "Torpedo" variety of beets, and the Detroit reds are also growing rapidly.
I used to peel before cooking but learned to...
