Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

It is considered invasive in some areas. My hubby is talking about ripping it up -- it is moving in on our blueberries despite being in raised beds. I will make a decision once I see the harvest. BTW, just planted cane -- a bamboo relative. Need some privacy in an outside shower area. Am I...

    Is this Kale?

Looks like Vates collard. No worries... Kale and collards are both yummy.

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

Wineberries are similar in taste to raspberries but they do not have seeds in the berries, don 't crush as easily as raspberries, and they grow in clusters, so they are easier to pick -- you just grab on (gingerly, as they are very thorny) and pull of several at one time. My neighbor gave me...

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

And, I really love coneheads. I just saw the movie this weekend and think Dan Akroyd was cheated out of an Oscar! As to raspberries, they are weenies compared to wineberries.

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

I forgot about sea oat grass. In many fishing trips to the Outer Banks of NC, I'd always loved the beautiful seed heads gently blowing in the ocean breezes, the tassels glowing silvery against the sky. Then I bought the stuff, multiple times. The seeds packets I picked up in tourist trap gift...

    Anyone from the Eastern Shore??

Is there anyone from the Eastern Shore out there? I see a wide range of locations, but none near me! It's be fun to have a forum meeting day at a local nursery!

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

It took a while but we bested the tomatillos. Their similarity to a poisonous solanum weed/nightshade that grows here was a big inspiration. I planted Japaniese honeysuckle because I loved the scent..... I'm ready to use the tractor to rip out the roots but I'm worried that the fence posts...

    Tell me your beet secrets!!!!

Not sure why hilling is recommended. But one of my buddies said his dad always said to hill, as do others. Maybe the hills help keep the plants moist???? Some say to hill onions as well, and they need lots of water.

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

I guess if you give the seed heads to the chickens and NEVER use the manure in your garden you might survive the attack of the amaranths! I did evening primrose, too. My husband hates it because it is always eaten up by Japanese beetles. However, we read that it is more attractive to them than...

Regrets: wish I'd never planted that.....

When our homestead was much younger, I had a lot of ground to cover and little money. I planted a euonymous vine that did a great job of covering bare ground and making it seem landscaped. 30 years later, the vine is a bane. It climbs up the house walls, grows THROUGH the walls and covers over...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Adding new radish, chard, and my pole beans -- Dr. Martin, courtesy of Mr Muggins. All of the tomatoes and peppers are settling in. We are harvesting tons of lettuce, Michili chinese cabbage, radish, chard, 2 types of kale, peas. The melons are up and I have a vegetable spaghetti squash that is...

    Tell me your beet secrets!!!!

It is too early to tell, but I can say that my beets are forming. I weeded my rows a couple of days ago and the thinnings -- not as many as I expected -- were definitely forming little bulbs. As I weeded, I munched the tiny roots and the beetiness was incredible. I have used leaves from...

    Tell me your beet secrets!!!!

One of my go-to garden buddies here reported that his dad hilled the beets. I will be hilling them. I have two rows going, with 4 varieties represented. I am thinning one row more than the other -- I will see which varieties need more thinning. Some of the varieties are more columnar, not...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

I'm shoveling compost today to build melon beds. I have them above ground to break new garden ground where we are expanding into a newly cleared area adjacent to our garden in the woods. My greenhouse is filled with tomato, pepper, and various melons and squash, waiting for signs of the last...

    Tell me your beet secrets!!!!

The beet seedlings are on their 3rd set of leaves and I am thinning judiciously -- the thinnings were a great addition to our salad tonight! I had a roasted beet salad the other night: oven-roasted beets peeled and chopped, Granny Smiths apples, shreded carrots, blanched green bean pieces, and...

    Another asparagus question

We get mushroom compost from a local garden center, but we are very close to a mushroom-producing area -- Kennett's Square PA. Mushroom compost is fabulous because it is sterilized twice over -- in the composting process as well as the sterilization done to prevent contaminants in the mushroom...

    Wrinkly eggs

Eggs are soft when laid. We've had some younger hens that laid crinkly eggs especially in cooler weather -- the egg doesn't lay evenly before the shell hardens. Sometimes it seems that yopunger hens are taken by surprise by the urge to lay and "drop it" unexpectantly in cold weather. Do you...

    Another asparagus question

The deeper the roots are, the better protected from heat. Deep roots come up a little later. As you mulch and add to the bed, the roots get deeper. Old, old beds produce for a long period because they have generations of roots at different levels. Add to your bed over time to protect the roots...
