    How deep to plant

Having just started a bunch and followed the instructions on the packages, I've noticed that in general the larger the seed, the deeper you should plant. Tomatoes and peppers and such all say about 1/4 inch, pumpkin and watermelon suggested about an inch. I made my own mix of 1 part potting...

    Hello 2013 !

Yaaayyyyy, green! I got my first little sprout yesterday...a wee broccoli poked its head above the soil...almost looks like a little 4 leaf clover. Of course, I picked up the container (an old cottage cheese carton) to admire it and then promptly dropped it! :( The sprout survived, but I'm...

    Indestructible plants

ROFL, Marshall...ain't that the truth!? I hate that stuff! I too prefer stuff you can pretty much stick in the ground and let it be :) My favorite flowers are irises...They're really hardy and about all you need to do is dig 'em up and thin 'em out every 3 years or so. Well, deadheading them...

    Tomato List

Holy cow, Steve...and I thought I was doing well with 6 varieties! LOL I went with: Jelly Beans (a hybrid...the only one, though) San Marzano Roma Cherokee Purple Abe Lincoln Better Bush

    That's bull!

I'm glad to see 'em! Marshall...why didn't ya just stay quiet, for Pete's sake? After all...she's the world's meanest woman, right? ;)

Height of raised beds and walkways

It really only needs to be deep enough to hold the appropriate amount of soil for growing what you want to grow, I think. Ours is only about 10" and does fine. If I go 4' wide, I like to be able to access it from both sides so I don't ever have to walk in it...keeps the soil from compacting...

    Freezer Question

Gotta agree with Monty...keep the old one. Never hurts to have a back up...and if you get to thinking about getting part of a beef or hog or whatever, you won't have to decline due to lack of freezer space :) If power surges are an issue, and it sounds as if they are, you might want to invest...

    Silent night.

It's like you're all alone in the world, isn't it? I particularly like it when it's cold enough that the snow squeaks under your boots. :)

    Help! What do I plant?

Excellent points! Impatiens also do well in the shade and provide lots of pretty color. Marshall is right (of course)...there's shade, then there's shade and again...shade :)

    pressure canner

Another vote here for "bigger is better"...get the largest size you can afford...you won't regret it :) Mine won't quite fit under my range hood either unless I pull the stove out about 6 inches. That's okay for a one-batch job but when I'm at it hammer and tong during harvest or when it's...

    Help! What do I plant?

There are quite a lot of things that will tolerate shade to part shade, but most don't have that splashy, colorful look to them. One of my favorites is Bleeding Heart. They come in several varieties, tho my preference is for the white. We have one outside our front in a spot that only gets...

    simple greenhouse with cattle panels?

It's a cool idea but both the sun and the wind would be serious issues here. At over 5000 ft, and few cloudy days, the UV eats stuff we leave outside :(

    Experimental quinoa planting.

Quinoa and amaranth are both very high in protein so can go to chickens and rabbits. What I'm wondering is what kind of seed harvest will come from the planting; can't wait to see Hoodat's results. I feed grains to both our chickens and bunnies. My basic mix is 4 parts barley, 4 parts oats, 1...

    Losing my seed starting space

Sounds like a real labor of love to me :) We have a big, south facing picture window, and I had DH put up shelves in front of it...so far it's working rather well. Any option to do something like that till you get your steps back?

    Experimental quinoa planting.

Wow, they look great! Do you have specific plans for the "crop"? I'd given some thought to trying this but not sure if the space required would be worth it for the return.

Taking the deep freeze plunge! HELP!

Excellent point RR...and since it's only water, if you need the space you can take it out and set it on the floor. We will need to be freezing soda bottles to provide cool for our rabbits come summer, so they'll come in handy for that. Now...to just make some space, LOL. Come to think of it...

Taking the deep freeze plunge! HELP!

We've had both in the past and if I were to get another, I'd go with a chest. They are harder to find things in, but if you organize like Lesa mentioned, you can get past that. We currently have an upright and frankly, stuff gets just as "lost" in it as in a chest, LOL. Plus, often when I...

    Paste Tomato

We've had such an extraordinarily dry winter that they've announced water restrictions for the coming seasons :( So, we're already squirreling away water for the garden areas...got 4 55 gal barrels buried that are full and even tho it's not legal, we're gonna capture our rainwater. IMO, that's...

Got my vacuum sealer from Amazon today

Thanks, Petey. I did look a few days ago...went through another site I found that was supposed to give me $20 and free shipping, but when I tried to order, it didn't give the $ off :( Of course, since then, they've been sending me 3 emails a day nagging me, LOL. Which model number did you...
