How very interesting. My new semi dwarf fujis are doing the exact same thing. It is a very expensive tree to up and die; other varieties from other sources are not showing this problem, and the one year older trees are fine.
We DO have a very nasty invasion of the new wonderbug, the kudzu...
this will be no help at all, but I had to share.
My first pineapple top, cut off a nice ripe pineapple, I stuck in a plastic salad tray filled with water. Then it got yucky with fruit flies, so I set it on the plant shelf in the garage (shop lights, winter, seed flats...) and promptly forgot...
I settled on this method for collards:
in bottom of big pot, fry up some chopped bacon
add several cloves of garlic, chopped, fry briefly.
throw in shredded collards to fill pot, with about a cup of water; stir often until well wilted, keeping lid on between.
After ten minutes of frequent...
Real studies showed those Jap beetle bait bags attract more to the area than caught...so just give some to your neighbors. My neighbor cuts his lawn super short - I call it scalped - and has such a grub problem I stopped free ranging my hens 'cause they all bee lined over there to dig up grubs...
geez louise! Not in the least bit surprized. The stories I could tell...
Wanna hear something funny about lawns? In my subdivision, I have the greenest nicest lawn this year and I tell you, no one is more surprised than I am. You see, I DO NOTHING but mow (with a bagger, so I can use the...
my two cents' worth:
1. I use a hefty handful or two of the oyster shell from the chicken supplies in every planting hole. Also have broadcast the stuff when tilling in lime. Stopped the BER in tomatoes and peppers...although this year is the first I'm really trying the Roma type tomato.
2...
I read somewhere to use coffee grounds around squash plants...my few plants, hidden in clumps of basil, are mulched deeply in coffee grounds in hopes I get some squash this year.
The bugs ARE horrendous! My baby orchard had a thick covering of kudzu beetles on all the new growth; lucky that...
did you see this? I just find it amusing to add "getting boinked on the head by a falling nut" another thing to add to the list "what will hurt/kill my chickens".
Here are the pros/cons as I know for the two trees:
Pecan:
PRO: valuable smoker wood. valuable nut crop. high light shade...
Yup, that stuff's invasive. A tiny sprout of lemon balm was in a plant....years later we've given up controlling it and it is now announced as the companion plant to our blueberries and blackberries. Last year the puppy demolished the pot of nice peppermint. Thought I had it all cleaned up...
my parsley comes up all over, so unless I have a real disaster, I'll always have parsley. The cilantro is starting to do the same. My weeding plan has become very selective - I know definite weeds to pull immediately, but I now wait until 2 pairs true leaves are up to identify, as basil...
yikes, kill it! ONE plant showed up, grew beautifully...the next year, everwhere. and the seed pods will spike through a flipflop. Random fact: related to okra, the seeds look identical. And, according to sources, is also edible at tiny pod size. But now I just search and destroy...
I vote for Poinsetta; mine get all rangy and wonky after a few months outside, if they live that long. I've also seen them growing wild/escaped south of here. There are so many varieties, no telling what after they don't get the specialized greenhouse care.
Leylands actually grow pretty fast, at least around Atlanta. My observations and research show that with proper soil prep, the little one to five gallon sizes outgrow the bigger ones...less transplant shock and stuff. They CAN be pruned, I have actually seen clipped hedges of leyland...they...
IMHO, no.
Went to a school with gym floors made of recycled tires. Once. Got so sick I nearly passed out, never went back to that building. Earthships are sealed units, basically, keeping the tires isolated from air and water, so I wouldn't be as worried about off gassing.
I've also...
I am curious as well, being motivated by a severely restricted diet and sticker shock at the specialty gluten free grain prices. I just broadcast an area with organic buckwheat and sorghum from seeds from the bulk bin. I had tested these for germination in a glass of water on the windowsill...
Chives - garlic and regular - only die back to dormancy after hard freezes.
Cilantro/Coriander
Parsley!!!!
Fenugreek...I have no idea what to use it for, but I didn't kill it when I tried to grow this one.
Good winter greens, since you seem to be searching for winter garden ideas:
mustards...
