Just a thought, why not plant some runner beans on the outside of the pen. Will give you some food, shade for the chicks and also food for the chicks from the bits that grow through the fence.

I have grown a tree from a mango stone. Just let it dry for a day or two the straight into potting compost in a pot. It's about three years old now, it's been in the ground for two years.
I am also told it will only produce small fruits, and should by grafted trees. We'll wait and see.

Yes definately sounds like GMO, that is one of the regulaltions of GMO produced items, that you cannot propogate from the plants, seeds etc.
