We used to use a plastic coffee container, but recently upgraded to a pretzel container. Now we can see all that yucky stuff inside. :D We also bought a stainless garbage can that was damaged. It has a plastic container w/ a handle on the inside. I keep it in the garage and it mainly gets...
Recently my wife was replacing some mini blinds. I cut up the slats and now have a whole bucket full. If you would use paint for the lettering I would think they would last quite a while.
I use the reinforcing wire also. My beds are 4 ft wide so I just put four of them next to one another and tie them together. Works for me. I also work them into the ground a couple inches.
Thanks Steve,
Looks like I better crank up the thermostat. My cabbage, broccoli, etc. did not do well last year. this article might have explained why.
I know that this would depend on what you are growing, but is there a general temperature that you should maintain at night? I have been keeping mine at around 40 degrees when the nights are down around freezing.
I thought mine did pretty well last year. Not as good the plants in the ground, but they are still fun for a conversation piece. I use a 2 gal. bucket with a 1-1/2 inch hole in the bottom. I am going to try a variety called Tumbling Tom this year.
Jared,
I am the one who posted the pics of potatoes in the snow. Yes this is my way of storage. The ground in my yard although covered with snow is frozen, in the garden however I plant my potatoes in two areas that are 4 ft x 8 ft. each. After they die off in the fall they are covered with...
Sonjab314,
I replied earlier about how I grow potatoes, these are a few pics from today (1.28.11), harvesting. I call it God's refrigerator.
This is the potato bed covered with snow - it is about 24 degrees today.
Next I shovel the snow away and pull back the compost
Remove compost...
sonjab314,
I read an article quite a few years ago about raising potatoes and until I find a way that I feel is better I am going to stick with it. It may or may not work for you.
All my garden beds are 4 ft. wide. I take an area 8 ft long and place the seed potatoes on top of the ground in...
Ditto - I have a friend who is a masonry contractor. I have gotten pieces from him. My cages have been 18: in diameter. If put in clusters of three or four you can tie them together and eliminate staking.
I grew Big Mamas and Pony Express last year for an experiment on bigger paste tomatoes. DW didn't express any preference of one over the other for processing but the Pony Express produced better. This was only a one year experiment but they were grown about 10' apart.
I forgot to tell you, the baked oatmeal is good with or w/o milk. I like it with and my DW likes it w/o. It is easy to make too.
Another tip: For charcoal, double the size of the oven. If it is a 12" use 24 pcs. Usually about 5 on the bottom and the rest on top. If it is more liquid that...
I love my Dutch Ovens. This is one of my favorites. I suggest that you Google "Dutch Oven recipes" There are hundreds of them, anywhere from breakfast to deserts. All I can say is experiment and find what you and your family like the best.
