I have tried them and like them, but I used my own version, a 2 gal. bucket with a hole cut in the bottom. Yes, they do not produce as well as a plant in the ground, but I had to cut mine because it was reaching the ground. I work at a retirement village and hang some around for the residents...
I also use a stone crock but I seal the top with a plastic bag. I form the bottom of the bag on top of the kraut and add about 2" of water. It seals it off and is very easy to remove when kraut is ready. I got the idea from a Dept. of Agriculture booklet.
If you are talking about what we call ground cherries they make an excellent pie. People in my area pay $50 for ground cherry pies at benefit auctions. I love 'em and my wife hates 'em, so I don't grow them any more. :(
Mamato3,
First congrats, I have one the same size and I love it. There is a previous post on this thread from a website that shows some improvements that you can make as you are building. I wish I would have seen it before I built mine, it is easier to do them while you are building it. I...
Will the same work with apple trees? Is that how the commercial growers get their fruit so big? I knew that a tree dropped fruit on their own but didn't realize that thinning would increase size.
I wrote in last year about starting some DWB's and couldn't believe how easy they rooted. I cut about 30 cuttings and they ALL started. My question however is should I pinch them back? Some of them got rather high and I cut the tops off thinking the bottom part of the plant would sprout, but...
I keep mine in the garage which is usually in the 40's - 50's What I might have to do next year is to have them in something that I can observe the growth a little easier.
Thanks again for the help.
Gardening books don't give you this kind of help. They only tell you how to do it right.
Thanks Steve
I did clean them up and inspect. The way I stored them might be the problem. I put them in a feed sack with wood shavings. I was the tubers on the bottom and in the middle that had the long sprouts. Should I store them with only one layer?
I'll try to remember to let you know...
I decided to take my Dahlia tubers out of storage and didn't realize how much they had grown already. I never had this happen before, some of them have long white spindly stems that were reaching for light, some around 12". Do I plant them as is or should I break off the stems? Will they...
ninnymary,
My beds are 4 ft. wide so I put two of them side by side across the bed, then I leave about 2 ft. between the next set. They are touching each other, in fact I tie them together for stability. I put several rows of carrots between them. This idea came from another good book called...
I have planted mine 18" apart for years. I use a cylinder made of reinforcing wire. Lowe's calls it remesh. It is 18" in diameter and 5 ft high. The openings are 6 x 6 making it very nice to just reach in and pluck a tomato. Each tomato is planted it the center and they grow right up the...
Square foot gardening is just the concept of dividing the garden beds in quare feet. Beds four feet wide are a good size to work with. You are not to walk in that area, from the edges you can reach in 2 feet. I have 2 - 3 ft. walkways in between. The rest is how far apart to plant everything...
Jackb, thanks for your help with question about the hanging baskets. It has been a crazy week and I haven't had much time on the computer. I did however find some pieces of 1" square tubular steel at a local salvage yard. They were 7 ft long so I used them as is for the uprights and only had...
Should work just fine. Last year I got some 3 gal. buckets from work and drilled holes in the bottom. They worked well as long as I remembered to keep them watered.
