    What is this odd plant?

In my part of the world, we call these horrible things cockleburrs. Do yourself (and everyone within 50 miles) a favor and kill this thing QUICK!! (OK, Laura, breathe now, in and out, that's a good girl :fl ) Those things have been the bane of my existence since I was a teenager. There is...

    Happy 4th Everyone!!

And a Happy 4th of July to you, too! Today, I'm declaring my independence from apricots. The trees are still going, but after processing 200 lbs, I quit. Gotta rest up for the tomatoes! :th Today is also DH & my 12th anniversary. Love that man for so many reasons, not the least of which...

The Any Wonderful Food You Made From Your Garden Today Thread!

Right now I wish I had only 1 apricot tree. Unfortunately :hide I have 14 of the things. And no, I'm not the one who planted them!

The Any Wonderful Food You Made From Your Garden Today Thread!

Apricots, apricots, and more apricots! (Did I really worry about them freezing out this year?) To date, I've got 4 gallons (yes, gallons) of jam in the pantry, enough in the freezer for 8 large cobblers and a gallon freezer bag full of dried ones...and they are still coming off the trees. :th...

    Raspberry Growing Guide

Good article! I just harvested all of my early crop (all 8 of 'em :D) last night...very yummy. As a side note for others who live in hot,dry parts of the world, I've had the best luck keeping the plants alive in part shade. Mine are under some trees and get about 4-5 hours of direct sun...

    Bugs on broccoli??

While enjoying our oh-so-brief cool front, I was out weeding and found an absolute invasion of tiny, black bugs munching merrily away on the broccoli. Since it is past time for me to pull it up anyway, I yanked it up and put it in the goathead (got an invasion of that too :th) sack for...

    will huckleberries grow in MA?

A second to what Steve said. My dad lives just outside Glacier Park (MT) and has been trying for close to 20 years to get transplants to grow in his yard. Really good huckleberry habitat from the human viewpoint. He has tried various methods of starting from seed, including some that don't...

    Chickens, beware the apricots!

After a few hairy hours last night trying to decided if my banty hen was eggbound or an internal layer, I discovered the TRUE cause of her distress. Her face was covered in... apricot goo. Not only could she barely open her mouth, but her nostrils were partially blocked. :barnie After getting...

    Worms Eating Tomato Plants!

Don't know if I'd try to grow tomatoes (or much of anything else) if it weren't for my chickies. It takes a lot to gross me out, but hornworms will do it in a heartbeat. :sick Not to mention it's a convienent way to dispose of other things that aren't suitable to drag back to the house!

    I'm being taken over

Knock on wood, the vinca finally seems to be under control. I never got around to trying the tarp, but it looks like 2 summers of digging, Roundup and more digging are starting to take their toll. :ya The one remaining clump flowered this spring...probably hoping I'd think it's pretty (which...

    The hummers are back!

beavis, if you like big hummingbirds, you need to go waaay south to Peru and check out the ones they have in the Andes! They aren't the most colorful, but those guys have like a 12-14" wingspan and sound really cool when they hover. Wish I could still find my pics of the one that buzzed me...

What should I use to shade the roots of my Clematis?

Now I understand the pile of boulders that my clematis is growing out of! When we moved in and were cleaning up the patio area, we found a beautiful blue clematis growing in the middle of a pile of rocks that are HUGE. Been planning on moving the rocks, but now I can tell DH that I'm not...

    Strawberry Plants ........... No Strawberries?

I feel your pain. I, too, have lots of flowers, but no berries. In my case, I think I have critters of some kind that are beating me to them. I'll see a small berry forming and then it's gone. Thinking I need to redo the strawberries in a container of some kind since the ones I grew in pots...

The Load Handler - Pickup Truck Unloader

Don't have any experience with one of those, but have to admit that I've lusted after one for a loooong time! Looks like it would beat shoveling the truck out all to pieces.

    Apricot not bearing fruit?

Patience, my friend! It takes a while to see the baby apricots. My trees bloomed almost a month ago and the apricots are just getting big enough to see if you look really hard. Right now, they are almost the size of a pea.

    When do apricot trees bloom?

My first thought before I read your post was "way too early"! After having read the post, I really don't have a good answer, just some observations. The neighborhood I live in is FULL of apricot trees of varying ages (and I imagine types). My trees seem to bloom a good 2 weeks earlier than...

    Trellis ideas?

Cattle panels are good, but not real pleasing to look at. I used some of the plastic lattice panels from Lowe's last summer and they are holding up well. Easy to cut to fit and not too expensive. Actually, I got them to roof my indoor chicken coop with and overbought...now the extras are...
