Good advice Steve. :thumbsup
When it comes to veggies, I will buy started plants and grow some from seed too. I usually only do a few tomato plants each year, so I buy those as started plants. I also buy peppers, herbs, and some beans as plants. Other things I just direct sow, like peas...
mmm.......peppermint tea is my favorite!
Are there different varieties of peppermint out there? I thought peppermint tea just came from peppermint plants................:idunno
Hey Briana! I recognize you from the BYC Michigan thread....:frow
As far as the green thumb thing goes...I try. :D And you? Have you been gardening for awhile?
I already have 2 Alexandria plants (red) that I grew from seed this season. They are in the ground under the snow right now, but I'll have to see if they will survive the winter in a pot.
I'm looking at ordering Yellow Wonder and White Soul Alpine Strawberry seeds from Pinetree Garden Seeds. I...
I think strawberries would do great in a window box.
Another thing....the more soil, and the bigger the pot you have, the better. :thumbsup
With all my containers (especially veggies) I like to start with fresh potting soil each year. It means more nutrients for the plants and less likelihood...
I think this past year I tried to plant too much in too many different locations (friends' gardens) and I stretched myself a little thin - not enough time to devote to everything!
So this year I think I need to work on concentrating my gardening efforts and focus on growing a few...

Thanks for the input Steve! I saw you posted something about Alpine...
That's interesting that they do fine in some shade. Are they still fairly productive without a lot of sun?
I've heard from others that they make good border plants too. That's a good idea to put them under fruit trees! :)
Thanks Rosalind. How long have you had yours?
I like the fact they don't make runners....but if they reseed like crazy...hmmm....i dunno which is worse? :P Oh well...guess I just have to try it and see how things go.
...anyone have experience growing them? any tips?
This past year I got a couple Alexandria Alpine Strawberries to grow from seeds that I ordered from Johnny's. One did well in a container and I even got to enjoy a few fruits from it this fall before the snow started flying. Since they are hardy...
Husk Cherries and Ground Cherries are different names for the same plant - Physalis pruinosa. They have small fruits that turn yellow when ripe.
Tomatillos are close relatives....the scientific name is Physalis ixocarpa. Tomatillo fruits are larger and they are more green when harvested.
I...
I'm in Zone 5 too....most veggies do well in containers here....you just have to keep on top of the watering and try to find shorter / more compact varieties of some things.
I've grown herbs, mesclun, tomatoes, bell peppers, ground cherries, and bush green beans in containers with good luck. In...
