Ridgerunner, I think people try and get animals to conform to what we "think" they need. On the ground, dark nest boxes with a curtain, etc. Not knocking those who do these things. If it works for you...go for it. We try and live more along the lines of, let them do what they do. They know...
We leave our lawn clippings on the lawn. Best way to get organic matter back into your lawn soil. IMO. But all weeds that I do pick, go right into the chicken run or to the pigs when we have them.
Like others have said, I would agree. The chickens know what they can eat, what they don't...
Nyboy, Thanks, we think he's cute too. Nope, that is a one year old heifer that we have and she was pretty smart not to engage. Pretty sure that Momma who was eating hay would have not been pleased if this heifer had started to play back with her calf. Pecking order. :D
Mary, he totally...
When we used to let our chickens free range, we had very, very few bugs including ticks. I'm guessing that the guineas would be the same.
Love that picture canesisters. Well not the snake part, :sick but the part where the entire barnyard has circled to see what all the excitement is about!
OK, technically, this animal isn't gardening. But he does work at my manure manufacturing plant which does support my garden. I put this video on backyardherds too but didn't know who is over there and who is not. He was just having so much fun I had to share...
Oh she has a least one egg under her. I didn't bother her too much because litterally there is a 4 inch gap where the roof comes down. If she moves enough that egg is going to be on the ground outside in a jiffy!
I didn't move her yet, because in the past, we have not had good success with...
I like a colorful grass looking plant with little wheat looking heads (about 1 ft tall) for the center. Then a medium size flower around that, like an impatient. Then a small flowy flower to fill in all around and flow over the top of the pot. Hows that for not much help?! Sorry!! :hide...
I have one hen sitting in a nesting box with several eggs tucked under. You know...safely 2 ft off the ground, walls on 3 sides.
AND THEN....
I have this hen. Sitting on an 8 x8, six feet up in the air with no sides anywhere. :th Crazy bird!
bj, I used to have a favortie saying, "you don't know what you don't know, until you find out." :D
So you were told it was one thing. It made perfect sense. No reason to question it. It happens. Now you know and you are able to help out the next person.
Sorry your hen in having a rough...
I think around here it is similar in regards to the old produce. I think the difference for them is that it's not like anyone is going to be boiling down some corn husks to eat themselves. At least I think not?
For the last two weeks, every time I go into the supermarket (which may be 2 to 3 times a week) I ask the produce people if I can have the bag of corn husks that everyone throws away. Around here, they have a big bucket near the corn on the cob and many people shuck it before they take it home...
That's awesome Monty! I love nothing better than to see a family outside enjoying their homestead, just being together and watching the animals. Look at the smiles. :D
Sorry bj. I know how that can be. I had wanted a rooster for 20+ years. Never was able to get one. Finally did and he was a beauty!! And a gentleman, until he was a bit over a year. Then he turned and was mean, mean, mean to the ladies. So to the freezer he went. I was sad with that one...
Congratulations! Wow that will be a huge savings for you. I can't wait until the day that we have fields and don't have to buy hay year round.
Nicely done!
Yes, Carol and you could put a note on the door that says, "leave clothes in basket before entering" :lau :lau :lau That would get your visitors talking!!!!
Ticks = Nasty! :sick
