Tell me about hilling potatoes, please

Okay - so if I don't hill my potatoes, then I won't get any? I see some website that say I can use mulch rather than soil. Would pinestraw work? I have lots and lots and lots of pinestraw.

Tell me about hilling potatoes, please

I'm still pretty green at this gardening thing - I didn't realize that "hilling" potatoes was something I should do. My potatoes look great. They were planted about three-four weeks ago. The plants themselves are about a foot tall, three, fairly close together rows in a 3'x7' bed, not...

    Eastern bluebirds nesting

We had bluebirds build a nest in my watering can I had hanging off the porch. They had babies even. Not a good place to build though. The cat had no problems at all. :(

    Starting seedlings with grow light...

I did 16 hours at first, then cut it back to 14 (an hour each at morning and night) then to 12 before moving outside.

UPDATE: Got the herbs in their pots and I'm EXCITED....

I second Miss Daisy's opinion on the corn. Circles would be better for pollination too. Do you like okra? I think they're extremely easy to grow and produce LOTS. It's pretty hard to not succeed with summer squash too.

    Egg shell question...

I put crushed oyster shell in the bottom of the hole, mixed in with a little dirt, when I planted mine. I'm sure egg shells could be used the same way.

Suggest another plant for me, please.

Yeah, the guy I talked to yesterday actually asked me questions about the location, what I wanted it to accomplish, growing conditions, etc. Like he actually CARED to sell me something that would do well and that I'd be pleased with. Would you believe that???

Suggest another plant for me, please.

I did some calling around yesterday and found a 6' one at a small, local, family owned nursery for $65.00. Lowe's tells me they'll get some in stock in a few more weeks, but the guy I talked to yesterday didn't know whether there would be any dynamites in the shipment or not. In looking...

Suggest another plant for me, please.

Yes, I have all but talked myself into the dynamite crepe myrtle. Provided I find one that's not pinkish tinted but RED, it'll be perfect. Right height, easily shaped/controlled, should take the drought and heat extremely well, will bloom all summer, and will leave enough sunlight below that...
