Note to burgled self: write down serial #s

There is crime, including violent crime everywhere. Our area is still reeling from a triple murder ( 2 adults and a 10 year old) , next town over ( my town has 140 people, the town over has about 150- so it's VERY small). They still haven't found who did it, but found the victim's vehicle...

    Chokecherry Tree

Search out internet pics that show the difference between ripe and unripe berries, and post your pics, both berries and leaves. Chokecherries are NOT poinsonous--it's an old wivestale. There is,likein many "pits"some small amount of a poison in the pit, but there is such a tiny amount it would be...

    Carrot flower

Gosh, If I were you guys, I'd let the seed manufacturers know, if for no other reason that to notify them in case it is happening to others. I'd be curious to see what they had to say. I had some red dragon and some purples last year from SSE that did GREAT!! Yummy carrots that were so hardy...

    Today's harvest

Did your potatoes die, or did the plant blossom then wilt away? If it just wilted, the taters are probably still growing--it's how they do it :)

    Mixing Miracle Gro Garden Soil?

You could always find a friend who raises chickens and offer to help clean the coop in return for some nice compost-making-material :)

    What should every garden have?

Lots of good advice here, though I haven't read all the posts. If you are limited in space, money, or motivation-- do not plant anything you will not eat. And only plant in quantities you are able to eat, preserve, sell or give away. Otherwise, you're wasting precious space and time. My...

    Does this look light blight?

Blight is fungal, and usually starts on the stems. Looks to me like insect or sun/wind damage if it's just the leaves- but check the website given to be sure :)

    Slugs

As long as you wash them off, I'm sure they are fine. Hattie--- you wouldnt' believe what's all over all your veggies -- when you're not watching :) Go ahead and eat it all up :)

REPORT: Tomato Blight Stikes Again 2010

Wife, I"m the only garden within half a mile or more, and lost ALL my tomatoes last year, all grown from seed, nothing brought in from the outside at all. The air and traffic brought it to me..

REPORT: Tomato Blight Stikes Again 2010

Oh, not again. I'm still just getting my tomatoes in the ground. I planted 60 heirloom tomato plants last year, and got just a handful of sweet pea currant tomatoes from the whole bunch. I suppose what's left to get in the ground, is going in pots, on the other side of my house, away from the...

    I just don't understand

How warm is it right now? If I'm not mistaken, cukes and squash don't do well when it's super hot, or super wet.. Cukes will also "stop" producing if you don't pick the veggies that have grown- they'll set a few, and if they grow beyond "normal", the vine thinks it's all done and doesn't...

    First year for heirloom Tomatoes

This is my second year giving some heirlooms a try-- I've also got Amish Paste and Hungarian Hearts on my "to do" list. Last year, my area got early and late blight- really bad. Hardly a tomato or potato field was untouched... Between some contaminated box store plant shipments, and...

    Am I an Idiot?

While you may be planting really late for your area- it's only late, in that you could be eating veggies now... EXCEPT, you wouldn't be, the deer would be. You're saving a lot of time and effort on wasted crops by not planting til your deer issues are solved. I'm still getting my garden in- in...

    will huckleberries grow in MA?

I have no idea, but wanted to let you know that I've got garden huckleberries that I started from seed, and have planted in my garden right now- first year trying. I'm in Northern Maine, zone 4b. I'll try to let you know what happens once the season ends! As far as making "one jar" of jam or...

    horseradish

I'm not sure if the same applies to horseradish as other "root" veggies, etc, but most grocery items are treated to inhibit root or shoot growth, with the exception of organic foods. I'd say, it can't hurt to try, but may not work. There are a lot of nurseries that sell the bare roots to...
