    Need suggestions

I found some old railroad ties in the cull section of home depot, and fashioned a planter out of them with rebar. I would like to make it a flower bed, maybe trying something new. Any suggestions? Specs-am sun, shade in the afternoon, and must be able to withstand NM heat this summer. I would...

    Spacing for sprawlers

My DH has just built me a lovely two tiered SFG, which is 3 foot by 5 foot (wierd dimensions, but we have to work with the space we have).Attached will be a trellis for climbing vines. My question-I would like to plant watermelon, cucumbers, squash, zuchini. How should I plant these? Is there...

    Tomatoes and Sq. Foot Gardening

I would think you could. There are those out there in the SFG comminity who say you shouldn't even plant tomatoes in adjacent squares (due to crowding), but last year as an overzealous noob I planted 2 and 3 in EACH square, and I got tons of maters (just turned into a tangled mess by the end...

    Frost coming! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

That's looking at the watering can half full, vfem. Good attitude! Well, garden seems to have weathered last night well. In addition to the covers we already had in place, we put lit candles insid an tall pots over each seedling . DH had a grow lamp wired to the front grower, since that one...

    Side dressing

I used fish emulsion last year, and it seemed to work really well. I'll probably do a little of both-my soil is a mix of peat, compost, potting soil and vermiculite (heavy on the compost), so I think they'll be good for a while. In a month or two I'll apply some fish oil, then a month or two later...

We are at high altitude-5300-5500 depending on who you ask. So I could let it sit for a month or so?

    When is hot compost safe?

What is the consensus on how long to let compost made with chicken poo rest so that it will be safe/not burn my plants?

    Side dressing

vfem- I added crushed eggshells at the bottom of my planting holes,(along with a pinch of the calcium granules I feed to the chickens). Hopefully this will ward off the accursed bottom end rot I experienced last year. It is very reassuring to hear that you do the same thing! As for the side...
