    Mystery Tomato

I've got some mystery tomato seedlings growing, too. It's going to drive me nuts! I got a free pack of "Mystery tomato" seeds from Baker and an "experimental" variety from Shumway. Darned if I didn't plant half a dozen of each to go with the bazillion other tomato seedlings I have growing...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

Update: So far, we've put in 3 apples, 2 peach, 2 Manchurian Bush Apricots, four blueberry (or maybe it's five), about eight or nine new raspberry plants (will have to check the numbers), five grape vines, 3 gooseberry, 2 native plum 1 dwarf mount royal plum, and a rose bush this year. I've...

Should I pluck out newly sprouting raspberry plant?

I agree! Leave it! Red raspberries (at least the ones I have) bear fruit on the current year's growth. So, that little baby should have fruit THIS YEAR. Blackberries, on the other hand, produce on last year's growth. So, protect that old growth. At the end of a growing season, you can...

    Free carrot seeds, Bakers Creek

Baker's Creek is great to work with. I go by and shop in their store a couple times a year when I'm through that area. They always toss something in, I think. I'm usually going out with bushes, plants, etc. plus a stack of seeds.

Do I HAVE to have a fan to vent my greenhouse?

I think you'll end up cooking your plants without it. Also, remember that there may be times you are not home to open and close windows yourself. I'm hunting for greenhouse ideas myself. Sites I've read suggest that a lot of people new to greenhouses or looking to economize are tempted to...

UPDATE: Got the herbs in their pots and I'm EXCITED....

Oh -- what to grow! Missed that part... Definitely cross off the Sweet Corn. Also, cross off any winter squash, pumpkins, or watermelons. They take a lot of space. Install a trellis and grow pole beans instead of any bush varieties. They take less space this way. Do climbing tomatoes...

anyone have some of these seed?

Since I moved a year ago, my perrenial stock is low so I don't have any to share. However, I do want to chime in and say that for those things that you CAN plant in March (and in Ohio you should be okay still) Baker Creek is worth the wait. I drive past there every now and then and stop in...

Favorite FLOWER to grow in your garden?

My favorite flowers to grow are Marigolds and the miniature daffodils. I also love roses, lilacs, and the old-fashioned orange tiger lilies that grow in ditches, etc. Well, okay, I like a lot of other flowers, but usually I focus on veggies.... I'm getting my fruit gardens in here this...

UPDATE: Got the herbs in their pots and I'm EXCITED....

Within 2-4 years, the plastic in the kiddie pools will start breaking and cracking. Then, you'll be faced with picking out all the plastic and disposing of it. I went the kiddie pool route once. Never again... I'd suggest a few landscape timbers, instead.

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Planted blueberries today! Currently preparing places to plant the apples, plum, and gooseberries. I needed a break. Even with help from my teenage son, I can only work so long at a time. Besides, it just decided to start spitting a few snowflakes down on us. Seems time to give it up for a...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Thanks, Jack. I started looking through your blog the other day. I'll have to do more later. With those costs, it does seem like they'd pay for themselves quickly enough. I've never grown things hydroponically before and will have to really study this one first. Do you need a pump and...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Jackb -- those salad greens look terrific! If you had to estimate the cost of setting up to grow what you've got in that picture -- the eight tubs of lettuce -- what would you say it would cost? It seems that amount would just about keep one or two people in salad greens each week. I think...

so how do i know when to plant and when is too early?

Of course, recognize that the last frost date you'll see is an AVERAGE, not a rule. You may want to tack another week on for everything except the hardiest of crops -- even things like lettuce & peas... Case in point: I have all of my early crops in the ground -- lettuce, various cold weather...

    Anyone sell their seedlings?

I have seen folks here selling them on Craigslist. You might try that, if you have a Craigslist for the place you live. The advantage is that it is free to post!

Super Perk To My New Job

HA HA. Unless these have been thrown in with "dirty" trash, they'd be on MY plate. I'm not above peeling back those husks and tossing it in a kettle of boiling water. Now, if they've been tossed in with general trash (bathroom, etc) then that's different. Then I might not want to feed it to...

Super Perk To My New Job

Ahem...I bet plenty of that produce is still human edible, too. Especially watch things like bagged fruit & veggies. They will toss them if a few in the bag go bad. However, there will still be plenty that are fine...

How to store potatoes over the winter?

I don't think I'd put the lid on. It seems like moisture would build up in the container and mold and rotting would result. I know that if I buy several bags of potatoes at once, the very FIRST thing I do is tear the plastic bags open and get them out of them. Otherwise, moisture is trapped in...

    "Best" books for a beginner?

Try googling your state name and Extension Service. Many of these publications are available for free online. You can even download them in pdf form in some states. If you live in an area that borders two states, you could google both of those states and get geographically correct...
