I have the hard pears also, these pears are best wrapped in newspaper singley and I put mine in a box and slide it under my bed for weeks,checking to see if they are ready to eat. They will turn yellow and be very sweet.
I haven't tried them but I really don't want anything that's genetic modified and that's why I try to stick to the heirloom types to plant in my garden.

You can just juice them out like it says on the sure jell package (boiling water & grapes) and then freeze the juice for making jam later or making grape juice or Homemade Wine ...
Dont be afraid of seeds.... just dry them and try planting them ! If they come up ,you got plants and if they dont ,try again !
A grocery store is a great place for seeds.... all the whole dry beans will grow like pinto,soy and others.
