I love the wheelbarrow planter! Do you drainage holes in the bottom? I have several of the metal containers without the handles or wheels and would love to put them to good use. Any info you could give would be great! Thanks:)
Buying seed packets from a big retailer can be very disapointing to be sure. They get a great deal from the seed company and the product get no service from a rep. They put them up and sell them out.
Independent garden centers on the other hand are much more reliable. Most are getting their...
If they are still alive they will and could turn out great. I've had the most success with starting onions in late summer and over wintering them. If they make you will have great onions sooner than growing them from sets in spring.:frow
They are a little of both. They are annuals that can self sow. The amount of seeds they produce varies on how well thet grew in the summer. I've had some make tons of seeds and anothers not so much.:)
I just read up on them in Sunset's Western Garden Book. They did well for me here in Eastern Colorado. The book mentioned the Scarlet O'Hara variety and it's large flowers. I am going to try that one this spring. I saved a few seeds from the Heavenly Blue this year.
Last years Grandpa Ott's...
Glad to know what it is as we have LOTS of it. We have been pulling them as much as we can but it does spread very easily. Fortunately non of our animals are interested in eating it!!!!:D
We live in eastern Colorado and I know what western clay soil is like. we use lots of homemade compost and a soil conditioner with humic acid. Humates will help alot to break up the soil particles and get water and plant roots deeper. While clay is often very fertile because of th low microbial...
I was going to ask the same question and found somebody already did. We have lots of pears on three trees (first time in six years!!!) and the wind is blowing some off every now and then. It's good to know that we may get a chance to eat them instead of the dogs getting them. Now I have to race...
Actually the weather can have a big effect on how vegetables mature and ripen. Here in Colorado we were very hot (over 90 degrees for 25 days in a row) in July and into early August and that has delayed ripening of tomatoes. Now high temps during the day are much lower than normal and tomatoes...
Here in Colorado many garden centers sell planting mix that contains mycorrhizal fungus. We use it to cover seeds planted in rows. It also works well in containers. As the market expands there are more products that you add to transplants and soil amendments. Marketing has been slow to tell the...
I grew an Atlantic Giant pumpkin last year that went about 200 pounds. It came up in a pile of composted horse manure. The plant started growing a full month after the ones we actually planted and it out grew them very quickly. I made small raised beds(2ft x 2ft) for each of the pumkin hills and...
