    Potatoes for chips

My brother also said you can't go wrong with russets for chips. His master thesis was on the economic impact of potatoes so he's my local potato expert even though I don't think he's ever had a garden. I found this USPB/SFA chip trials article and one of the potatoes mentioned is the Kennebec...

    Potatoes for chips

Can anyone recommend a variety of potatoes that make great chip? My favorite chip maker uses NorValley potatoes. I haven't found this variety for sale. NorValley sounds like a brand. Does anyone know what type of potato it is or can suggest another chipping variety? Thanks.

    Onions

Thanks for the tip on dixondalefarms.com. They are much cheaper than the sets sold in the catalogs I have. They even sell the same mixed bunches. I tried onion seeds last year because I heard that onion from seed keep better and taste better. Unfortunately they didn't work. The weather was...

    Gourmet potato recommendation

Any other recommendations? Last year I just planted potatoes from the supermarket. The Yukon Golds grew excellent and tasted excellent. The russet and red potatoes didn't do as well. This year I think I'll order real seed potatoes and want some tasty, non-supermarket variety.

    test my own soil?

Just found out that UMass does soil testing for much less than my local labs. $9 for PH, nutrients and heavy metals. http://www.umass.edu/plsoils/soiltest/soilbrochdec2003.pdf

    killing weeds naturally

My neighbor told me that the previous owners sprayed roundup everywhere which could explain why my yard is made up of creeping buttercups, milk thistle, dandelions with very little grass or clover. Straight vinegar works to spot treat and it's cheap. I use it in the driveway.

Runner that is taking over lawn

Well at least this noxious weed isn't illegal just obnoxious. I also get milk thistles popping up which are banned. It looks like I need to dry out the lawn and lime may help. I like the idea of stepables but for now I want a plant that will crowd out the buttercups. Not a fan of toxic plants in...

why I am GLAD that it's so darn cold!

Here we're sick of Winter also. Record lows, then record snow, then record rains, then flooding. Today the sun never came up. Gray and gloomy. Much too soon to start seeds as they can't go out until mother's day. Reduced to just looking at seed catalogs.

Runner that is taking over lawn

Thanks for the help. I hate not knowing things. I'm in the Seattle area, it likes both.

Runner that is taking over lawn

I may learn to like this plant if I knew what it was. It's rather invasive. It tries to take over everything not just the lawn but I'm able to yank it out of the garden beds. There was some clover that looked like it was going to take over the grass but then this unknown plant took over the...

Where do you buy your seeds?

I get most of mine from True Value. They sell a few brands. The Territorial seeds did well, the other brands not as good. I think it has to do with the brand of seed rather than where purchased. I imagine the big box stores tend to carry lower quality brands. Last year I also bought from The...

Runner that is taking over lawn

Help this is taking over my lawn. Don't know what it is or how to get rid of it. I'm not a big fan of grass so if anyone has an idea of a ground cover that will smother out this runner plant I'd appreciate it. I understand that buckwheat will smother pretty much everything but I need something...

    test my own soil?

Does anyone know how well the electric pH meters work? I'd rather use a meter than test strips but not sure if the meters are accurate.

Forcing tomatoes to ripen... time frame

The hanging upside down method is the only one I have heard of. I was hoping to avoid that. To pick them don't they need to be close? Most of mine are as green as the leaves.

Forcing tomatoes to ripen... time frame

silkiechicken did it work? My 60 days tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. My big beautiful 80 day tomatoes are still so green. This will likely be the last warm week. Were you able to trick yours?

    Hostile takeover of planter box

I'm thinking of putting the planter in the chicken run for the girls to take care of but I want to make sure it isn't a plant that will harm them first. I really need to get a field guide. There are so many unknown plant popping up in my yard.

    I'm here in Washington state

Glad to meet you all. I'm also in Western WA. 45 minutes NE of Seattle. Sad to hear but relieved that others are having sorry looking gardens. Of the seeds I planted outdoors only the lettuce, spinach and corn came up. Not a single carrot sprouted. :( I'm going to sow some more carrots today...
