My compost bin turned into a worm farm

Yeah. I have a very cold bin. Granted, part of that is probably due to the fact it's shaded. I also realized that my FIL BLOCKED ALL THE VENTILATION HOLES. I don't get that at all. Is there some form of composting that doesn't need air? All that blocking the ventialtion did was result in a...

My "little" tomato plot update Aug 5, 2011

    My lemon grass experiment....

Lemon grass is very frost tender. Mine is just barely hanging on in the shelter of the kitchen window ledge, in behind the screen of snow peas. I remember to water it occassionally, and am hoping it'll do well in our summertime.

    different basils comparison

I'm going to try two different types of basil, Thai basil and Sweet Italian. I love basil to death, so really look forward to having them growing.

    Figs

Figs are incredibly sweet as is. You might want to preserve whole figs, as well. I hear some people like them.

    Cherokee Purple - Normal size?

Awesome! I was growing some HUGE Grosse Lisse tomatoes last year, but not nearly as big as that cherokee purple! The biggest was just under half a kilo. This year, I plan to grow Moneymakers, Cherokee Purples, Black from Tula if I can get it, an heirloom Cherry mix, and hopefully soem form of...

    Rose Hips, What to do?

I have a wild rose in the back yard. It had a bazillion rosehips on it last year, so I picked as many as I could reach. They came opn at a strange time of year, summer time I think, so I had no hope of waiting for the first frost before they were ruined. I picked them when they started getting...

    Useful Flowers

That sounds about right. I compare it to Northern California, because that's where I'm from, but the summers are not as hot and dry. I think in comparison, we are more like sourthern or middle oregon. Rhododendrons do very well here. There are gardens that are full of them in places. Summer can...

2011 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - JOIN US BY AUGUST 1ST!!

I'd join, except for a few reasons: I have no room: to devote space solely to growing a giant pumpkin would be shooting myself in the foot for other things. October is mid spring for us. This is probably the actual time I'd be sowing/planting the pumpkin, rather than harvesting. (Love these...

added an 8 by 16 no dig potato garden, what do you think?

Ah, but I'm not in America any more. In Oz, apparently their possums mean something to them. (Admittedly, the possums down here are decidedly more handsome beasts than the American possum.) I have tried possum (they're a pest in New Zealand, so they're shot regular for meat and fur). It ain't...

That takes the cake (Disease pics on post #10)

Grody! And unfortunate. :( Does that mean you have to grow the tomatoes in a different location, like you do with potatoes to prevent blight?

    Pretty Peppers

Wow! I grew a Thai Hot one year, it was fantastically productive. Tons of tiny red peppers. They're so small, my Dad looked at them and trembled in fear. :P This year I want to grow Anaheims and Jalapenos, along with my Cayenne and whatever milder pepper I want. The only thing with them is they...

added an 8 by 16 no dig potato garden, what do you think?

We don't have voles...we have possums. In a matter of a few nights, they mowed down our Brussels Sprouts! :he The problem with them is they are nocturnal, so you hardly ever see them, they climb, so they can get right over the fence, and they're protected down here, so you can't shoot them (and...

    Succession Planting

It looks very good. I see you have your onions (or garlic) planted around the edges. Do they do a good job keeping pests away for you? That reminds me, I have Baby Bok Choy to sow as well. And that my potatoes need to be set out to chit for a while. :P (Well, at least removed fro mthe bag...

    Red Onions- long not bulbus.

I'm experimenting with growing onions from seed. I sowed two rows of onion seeds in the garden plot at the beginning of winter (or late autumn, maybe). I chose two varieties, California Red and Hunter River Brown. They're both supposed to be bulbing onions. I also have seeds for bunching onions...

    Useful Flowers

I'm interested in "useful" flowers, ie edible flowers, flowers that attract pollinators, and flowers that keep pests away, or flowers with medicinal values. I have limited space, so if I'm going to plant anything, I want it to be a plant I can use. Any suggestions?

    Succession Planting

Great pictures! I've been doing all kinds of research on succession planting, but for the life of me, I just can't get organized enough to actually plant things that way. :P I'm such a haphazard gardener! XD

A look at my Zucchini plant updated Aug. 5, 2011.

Looks great! I still need to get my zuke seeds, because I want to grow enough for both the hubbs and I, and to sell.
