Then you need to ferment it. No cooking involved. We've kept it for months and it is absolutely delicious! Don't know how long it would keep, as we always finish it up before it spoils. Usually around January or February. Instructions on the fermenting thread on the sister site, sufficientself.
I have a permanent bed of bunching onions and am trying to get it to expand, we love them so much. I slice them up and throw them in the freezer. No chicken soup tastes right without scallions!
Air flow is important in a non-electric solar dehydrator. That is why I crack open two windows when I use my solar dehydrator, aka the car! I will often finish a batch in my little electric dehydrator, but a lot can get done in a car parked in the sun on a hot day. If you have a vehicle with...
I use glass jars, anything from a quart to a gallon. It comes out great. I ferment most stuff on the counter at room temp (70's) for about three days then store it in the basement fridge for weeks/months. 'Kraut gets better...as do many ferments....after a few months of aging. The glass jars...
I second that. I took that book to bed with me two winters in a row and read it cover to cover twice. It still lives next to my bed and I reference it a LOT.
Yup. I'm a nerd. :D
I'd ferment the anaheims separately then mix the two. The anaheims will need to go through the fermenting stages in order to keep well, and the first batch needs to stay in cold storage.
You could simply use a smaller spoon when you use them.... :P
Wow. Does anyone here have a membership in Seed Savers? I was looking at their site again, and am trying to figure out what the advantage of paying $40 for a membership is. Supporting the cause, yes, and.....access to more varieties (not necessarily a plus for me, as I can get overwhelmed by...
Hmm....do they need to be blanched? When ya make a liqueur, you don't blanch the fruit...hmmm.....Do you know why they are blanched for this? I was thinking of just running some through the food processor and tossing them in some vodka, straining after a month or so. Maybe put one fresh one...
My "recipe" is very simple:
Hot peppers
Water
Salt
Whey (optional)
Seed (if desired) and mince the peppers, pack them in a quart or larger jar, add filtered or well water (chlorine-free is the key here) and 1-2 tsp salt...preferably Celtic or Redmond brand, or another high-quality...
I mince them and ferment them and then the jar goes onto the dinner table when I am serving something hot...chili, nachos, etc. People can then kick their plate up a notch or two by adding the peppers. I also made some fermented salsa that was a huge hit...cuke salsa and tomato salsa....that...
I discovered something by accident last year when I was making a layered dip for a potluck and forgot to drain my fresh diced tomatoes and ran out of time....so I ran them through my salad spinner. I couldn't believe how much almost-clear juice and seeds came out!
Cut them across the "equator"...
Just a note on the lack of eggs during the moult....I start saving up eggs (second fridge really helps!) late summer and dating them and stashing them in the fridge. They will keep for four months (MEN tests.) No buying icky store eggs here! Maybe one dozen if I misjudge, but it is dh who...
My chickens would hop right over a 3' fence, and some still go over the 4' fence. Yours will be so narrow......can you put another bit of fence on top as a cover? Then you can make it low and they won't get out. I cover my brooder pen to keep hawks out and nimble chicks in. I use deer...
Summer squashes make a showy plant with large, lush leaves. And what is prettier than a big tomato plant covered in red tomatoes? Just use something to support it that blends in or is decorative. I used a green t-post and wired a large tomato ring to it. These two types of plants were my...
Yup, I agree with all of you, mostly. :D I loved the book. I love that he takes the time to research and to EXPERIENCE the different "meals" that the book is based on.
If you need to agree with everything someone says in order to listen/read, you will be talking only to yourself! I...
Sorry, no photo, wish I had taken one though. It was one of those things....I was burning brush, and the previous winter some critters had eaten the roots of the tree and it simply fell over once the ground thawed. I was about to throw it on the burn pile, but its shape caught my eye. I took...
I tried several times to grow Morning Glories from seed with no success. Then someone told me to rub the seeds on a nail file or sandpaper, just a bit, to get through the seed coat but no further. Then plant. It worked!
I chose a shorter variety (5-6') of dark purple ones and they've been...
