LOL Pat. I have 2 funnels and I hide them from the kids. Lost too many lid lifters that way.
I do mostly pints and some qts. Less than 2-3dz 1/2 pints a year. Will have to try with a stock pot. Maybe I'll do more.
Had to look it up myself. LOL Really dark blue/purple.
Little info and a place that stocks them. Fall planting.
Sorry haven't found anything yet for golden plums.
So many good ideas. Thanks. I went from "What am I going to do with all these pears?" to "I don't think I have enough pears." :)
What about grapes? I have 2 plants that the former owner used for wine. The more I look into the winemaking, the more I think DHs right. I just don't have the...
I completely agree with Grow 4 Food. I rarely have probs finding people to give away to. Between all the veggies and hopefully eggs soon I'm not anticipating chicken/neighbor problems.
DH always way overplants. Some things some years just don't do well no matter how many you plant or what...
Thanks for the info. I will check them. So far I've only got one that I know of. Course the pumpkins just started this last week, so maybe the bees were just being lazy.
I'm really anxious to try spaghetti squash and I was hoping to have some to put up.
I've been canning enough years that I have tons of canning things I've aquired. Some thing I like, some I hate and some I've never used. Currently, I've got things spread out over 2 houses at the moment, so I find I'm needing this or that and with gas being so high, sometimes it's just cheaper...
We've been going through the same thing. So has everyone we know. General consensus was weather.
Personally as the canner/preserver, I'm enjoying the slower pace.
:gig :lau :gig
So if I have tons of flowers, but they just die off and I'm not getting pumpkins, or in my case spaghetti squash, it means the bees aren't getting the job done?
What is grafting?
Ugh! Planting takes forever. At my old place we planted apple when DS was 18mnths old. He's now 9 yrs and NOW they decide to start producing. :barnie
We planted apple, peach and plum here. Couldn't find any pear. Former owner was by and we started talking fruit trees...
So far my kids have hated all my fruit leathers. I don't have my screens here at the moment anyways. I've got my stuff spread out between two houses. My other place is far enough away that with gas prices I only get by about once a month. Remembered dehydrator, forgot screens. :barnie...
I was just talking about warming the jars up in the oven. I'm pretty lazy about it though. Short of the occasional jelly recipe, I don't usually use any recipes I need to sterilize for. I also mostly use my pressure canner. When I do need to sterilize, then I just use the water in the...
The pear halves, pearsauce and pear butter are a given. When I told DH I might make wine, he just laughed and said I don't have enough patience. Probably true. Still I won't rule out a try.
So conceivably you could use the paintbrush method with a hothouse and keep some things going through the winter?
I get tired of waiting for things to ripen, having a crazy week or two to get everything put up and paying so much for fresh produce in the winter.
DH said we'd need a hothouse if...
I have never made wine before. Is it terribly difficult/expensive. The former owner used the grapevines on the property for wine.
Outside of some juice and jelly, I was at a loss for what to do with them. And to be honest we don't drink much juice or really prefer grape jelly.
We're not...
