I would be interested to hear more about this, too. We're vegetarians, so beans/legumes=cheap protein!
I have some black-eyed peas that I plan to dry to store, and they are doing very well. I'd like to also try black beans next year...
ETA: I don't know if you've found this in your internet...
I knew this would be a good topic to start--because I knew I would get some fabulous ideas! ;) I really would like to get much more smart about succession planting. And that means getting organized, preparing beds and knowing where/when I'm going to put stuff...and with a toddler in the house...
So...for many of us, summer is in full-swing, planting long done. Seems like most everyone is harvesting and preserving. Me, I'm in Zone 7a, and it's HOT! Whew! I was also quite remiss in getting anything planted this year, so my main garden got underway, well, late. I've just now got...
:lau Have I ever told you how much I enjoy reading your posts, Pat?
I've only ever heard of the method that Pat describes. This is my plan for my black-eyed peas...though in the meantime, they have plans for world domination--and my backyard is first on their list to take over! :ep I...
I wash it then shred it on my box grater, let it sit in a colander w/a few paper towels to get any extra moisture out of it, then pack it in freezer bags. I've never peeled or blanched it. I usually pack it in baggies with 2 cups each--which is the amount of shredded zucchini my favorite...
How dangerous is it to produce, with what the lye being involved and all?
Lye scares me.
My husband is fascinated by the prospect of producing biodiesel. We have a large wood burning furnace with oil back-up....to not have to pay the oil company would be a wonderful thing. ;)
ETA: This...
Well, just to let y'all know, I did put a bit of epsom salt on my plants a couple days ago (though I didn't know how much to use, and so just sprinkled a little bit around the base of the plant). My droopy pepper plants are now lively and happy. :D And full of little flower buds! One of those...
I try not to water overhead, but I am using just a regular garden hose so sometimes when I get in a hurry everything gets "sprinkled". Yes, I did just transplant these (I am waaaayyyyy late getting started this year!! But better a few late peppers than none, right?) so that might be...
The deer around our place are getting quite bold. My garden is only about 12 feet from the house. They haven't gotten to it yet, but last night I saw them about 20 feet from my plants! I turned one of my dogs after them. The dog doesn't have that high of a prey drive to really do anything...
Thanks! I had just watered when I took those photos--they do dry out quite a bit between waterings (sometimes to the point of wilting a bit, and the soil is dry to the touch if you poke around the plants) so I often have to water in the morning and in the evening. It's been hot and dry here...
I have the worst luck with peppers. I thought these were doing OK, but then a few developed some spotty looking leaves (first pic). Then another is just...droopy? For no apparant reason (pic 2). And my cucumbers have some browning/yellowing on the edges of some of the leaves (pic 3).
Does...
Gosh my own post is making me hungry!! I absolutely loooovvveee rose-flavored food. And one of my most guilty pleasures...smoking honeyed rose-scented tobacco (shisha) in my hookah. Don't do that very often, actually haven't at all in a couple of years since I've been pregnant/had a child! I...
I've grown a few roses successfully before, but I'll freely admit that I'm clueless about all of the varieties!! I would like a rose that has a strong scent because, thanks to a thread on homemade wines over at BYC, I really would like to try my hand at rose petal wine! However, the roses I...
I. Need. Dirt. Ok, soil. :D This shouldn't be so difficult, but seeing as I over-analyze everything, it's, well, driving me bonkers.
I have a small garden (6' X 8'? -ish), several itty-bitty rasied beds (2' x 2'), and several containers that I am working on planting. I need to build up the...
That sure sounds like a great space-saving idea...what varieties have you used this way? Do you use a container/"patio" type, or just whatever suits your fancy??
Ok. Really dumb question here (feel free to laugh at me. Really.)
Field fence cages: Plant on the inside, just like a store-bought tomato cage? Or plant on the outside, and velcro/tie plant to cage like a trellis?
Notice I said hoping that the garden gets more attention--I'm not holding my breath here! My little one will be 1 year old in June. He's, um, distracting, to put it mildly... :gig
I might try the eggshells too, can't hurt. And there's no shortage of those around here!
