I live in a border zone 8/9 I can grow potatoes yr round but they do better in the cooler mos than in the heat. I will be shading potaotes this yr to see if that helps.
We got the old sheep pen cleaned out yesterday & spread over the expansion area of our garden & got started on moving the raised beds(I need to put wire under them for gopher issues). Today we are moving our 2 tractor tires for the strawberries & aloe vera plants & more work on raised beds. We...
I like to see weeds as it means less hay to buy for my animals!! I water my weeds on purpose to let them grow & of course to soften the ground to pull them easier. In fact I am going out ina bout 30 mins to pull them for their breakfast!
We have no top soil here & clay soil to work with. I took one section of my garden & for 2 yrs just buried my kitchen compost right into that area & now the soil is the best looking in my garden. I continue to work on my soil every yr & this will be the 8th yr planting out here. We till...
My mom thinks I am crazy because I water my weeds. But I do that so I can pull them easier to feed to my animals. So yes I can be seen walking aound with a hose spraying my weeds when it is dry & the ground is too hard to pull them out easily. :hide
:watering
I know you are just joking. I wish we had more of a winter here so spring would be nicer & longer here. We get about 3 wks of spring & then the heat starts rising up there. I don't live here because of the weather believe me. I want to live somewhere that has 4 seasons.
Now I can rub it...
Bats are actually gentle creatures & do not "attack" people. Usually the guano piles up underneath where they sleep.
thanks for the plans we have bats around here but I have been wanting dh to build me a box or two for a long time to encourage them to stick around here better & eat the nasty...
Yea she would pick them & run to the chicken pens as fast as she could!! In reality I could not help but laugh to myself of course as it was cute.
Ds does get to plant his own raised bed, he prefers the carrots to plant in his every yr. Not sure what else he will plant this yr yet.
We try to pull them root & all before they seed. But we use them as a supplement to feed the cattle & our ram & the chickens too. In fact one area that was heavy with weeds last yr only has about 3 weeds growing there this yr! Even as pesky as they are we need them to feed the animals with as...
My dd who will be 3 in May, loved to pull the green tomatoes to feed to the chickens last yr & pulled a few other essential plants while ds & I were pulling weeds!!!! :barnie So I basically just let her dig in one spot. I am hoping this yr will be better & different for her & no...
Ann I did say I was not trying to be mean. Be glad you get the rain you get, we average 8 inches a yr here in the desert! So water is the big issue for gardening here.
I bought the roots, they were 2 yr roots when I got them so the first batch are now 4 yr roots & the second batch are now 3 yr roots. Plus i am planting another batch this yr too.
About 2 weeks ago when I was giving a gardening class, I noticed a few little asparagus stalks, now there are 5 on that plant! I was shocked they started this early, but happy & excited. Bad news they are not on a plant I will harvest from this yr. I planted my bed half one yr & half last yr...
WE get them really bad here in the summer once the cotton fields get going real well & they start crop dusting. I use the sticky traps & that helps tremendously in my garden.
I use the cleanings from my nest boxes in the coop for my asparagus bed. I get manure(fertilizer) & straw(mulch) this way. This will be the first yr I can get cuttings from my asparagus & I can't wait. I found one already sprouting out there a few weeks ago, but it is from a plant I need to...
