Big and/or weird - The strange veggie thread!

It's just a garden variety lemon. I guess it's deformed because it came from a half-broken branch. I got scared just looking at it! Here's another picture of it.

    Growing tomatoes in pots?

Finally I was able to buy some heirloom tomatoes, but I ran out of room in my new raised beds. So I'm thinking transplanting to pots. Will tomatoes do well in pots? And how big a pot should I use? The tomatoes are Southern Night, Red Brandywine, and German Red Strawberry. THANKS!

    Square foot garden pics

Hmm ... I don't get it. Aren't your plants a little too close together? Did I see you have more than 1 tomato plants in the same square? How will they not suffocate when grown up? Maybe I need to check out that book, SFG, from the library and read first.

    My compost pile

Hmm ... that sounds tempting, although my wife cringes at the idea. I will have to set up some kind of run for it though, or just let them share the chicken run. When I let my chicken free-range they keep hanging around the rear patio waiting for treat, and make a mess there all the times. So...

    My compost pile

OK ... tell me about the "fun" part with duck. I have 4 hens and a bunch of rabbits at this time, but tempting to add some ducks :D The chickens follow me all around. Do ducks do the same? I need a pond. And some kind of duck-run so they don't poop all over my yard. Do ducks lay egg? How...

    What a week!! PHOTOS

That's a lot of work!!! Congrat's on the great deal you get on the lawn material :) However I must say this ... that artificial stuff just doesn't look right on the beautiful, natural garden that you have. But you do save water! What is that vine that you had on the arc last year? It was...

    Who knows Poo?

Maid - what do you do to curb rabbit production? I don't mind having about 4-6 rabbit running around in the chicken run, but we're up to 11-12 now (not quite sure of the number because some from the new batch are still in hiding :-) ) My kids wouldn't let me eat them :-) Please share your...

    Transplanting Lime Tree

My mom gave me a precious lime plant that she grew in a pot. I'm going to transplant in the backyard. My problem is this: It is actually TWO plants sitting about 6 inches apart. The trunks (?) are about the side of my index finger. 1. Should I clip off one of them before planting in the...

What do you use for YOUR raised beds?

I don't know if I made a mistake or not: I just built one bed (my first) with wood from my old fence. It's falling down anyway and my neighbor and I need to put in a new fence. The wood is only 3/4 inch thick, so I double them up to make 1.5" walls, by just by screwing 2 flat boards together...

Another question about filling raised beds

Thanks everyone for helping our a new gardener. So if straw is to be avoided, what would be a cheap mulch material? I want to cover the walkway in between the beds to keep weeds from growing. Was thinking of just go get some old discarded carpet and lay it out there, but it won't look nice.

Another question about filling raised beds

I'm a new gardener planning to build 3 raised beds. I have a chicken run with 4 chicken and 3 rabbits for a couple years. Sometime ago I read from a post by Nifty that dirt in the chicken run was like "black gold" so I plan to mix that in with dirt at the raised beds. I can borrow tiller from...

Raised Garden Project - just started!

Hi Beavis - a new gardener here with some questions: 1. Can you elaborate why drip irrigation doesn't work so well? I thought it's supposed to save water, and slower irrigation is better? 2. With the scrubbers how far apart should I position them? If I have 12' x 4' bed, should I run 2 rows...

    Online Mail Order

Thank you Steve. Very helpful. The UC website is very informative. It seems gardening is a lot more complicated than I've thought. So much to learn - types, seasons, sun, shade, space, trellises, etc. It'll take me years to be good at it. One thing I'm happy about is my soil seems so...
