How tall should a garden fence be?

A local drug manufacturing facillity (Pfizer, formerly Upjohn) is totally surrounded with Eight foot high chain link with barbed wire at the top. Driving by I have often seen deer inside the enclosure and in numerous places you can see deer hair on the barbed wire where they have jumped the...

    Asparagus Question - Zone 5

Speaking of asparagus. Does anyone have any tips on weed control in an asparagus bed. I have been keeping them mulched with grass clippings and haven't had a lot of problems but I drive past an asparagus farm on the way to and from work and rarely see any weeds in their 8 acre field. Does the...

    Seeding B.O.S.S. Update

Thanks for all your input. I did raise about 20 plants this summer and the majority had nice large flowerheads. A few came up with five to ten small heads on a stalk. Now I need to find a way to keep the birds from 'helping" me harvest. By the time I thought they might be dry enough to store the...

    SNOW

We have had a few flakes here and there but that is not uncommon. They are predicting higher than normal snowfall this year, something to do with la nina. Sure hope they are wrong. I live in the snowbelt on the eastern side of lake Michigan so I wind up with more than the rest of the state as a...

Not a single green pepper this year!

Funny you should say that. I honestly thought I was planting sweet hungarians until I sliced a few and put them on a peanut butter sandwich. Imagine my surprise after that first bite. :somad

Not a single green pepper this year!

Seems the weather this spring (a cold snap amid high temps) shut down all my bell pepper plants. I never saw a single blossom. Talking to the owner of a local farm stand and a couple of the neighbors we were all affected. Go down the road ten miles and they had no problem. Wierdest thing is the...

    Potato storing tips?

I have never grown or stored white potatoes. I did however grow sweet potatoes last year. I admit I canned most of them but those that I didn't can I stored on a screen rack in a small bedroom on the north side of the house. That particular room is the coolest room in the house through the...

    Possible Frost Tonight

Consider yourself lucky. Mine have been in the house for about 3 weeks now. Looks like tonight will be our first "hard" frost though. Temps may actually dip below freezing.

Need feedback on a solar greenhouse - cold weather, low heating reqmt

:welcome Wow. Looks to me like there is going to be a HUGE investment in time and money involved in this project. Trust me I am no engineer and I don't know where Woodland Park is but I live in Michigan and I couldn't even think about a similar project without a back up heat source that might...

Need shade-loving prolific vines to surround chicken run

A Note of caution. Regardless what type of vine you choose be certain to keep it OFF the house. Vines are very intrusive. I have seen them grow under siding (even wood siding) and dislodge it and grow right into window frames and destroy the weather stripping. They can push their way right past...

any ideas for mulch/ground cover for high winds area?

Why not keep it simple.... Grass clippings. Once they are watered in they form a mat that is almost impossible to move. I have a very windy location and have never seen the wind move them. They also add organic matter to the soil.

    Soda Bottle Slow-Drip Irrigation

That is what I was thinking. Seems if they were saddled in a hole about 4 or 5 inches deep in the soil with a few inches of mulch above that they would be more stable. Also when you pull the bottle to fill it you can test the soil moisture at the bottom of the hole to see if additional water is...

    Soda Bottle Slow-Drip Irrigation

Rebbetzin... I'm curious. When using the "closed" system did you use more or larger holes in the cap. Also there was nothing in the article about the depth in the soil that the cap should be for optimum water retention. Being in a northern climate I can see where the bottle would also act as a...

    Asparagus Roots vs crowns

Can anyone tell me what the difference is? I saw asparagus roots for sale at TSC. I see crowns for sale in many catalogs. There is an obvious difference in price. Do roots take longer to mature? TIA. :idunno
