Ideal Chickens for the Home Flock.....

Hoodat, I think it's a tie between the two. I have one of each but they have not started laying yet. I'm not even sure if they are males or females yet but I am leaning towards female. They do not have drake feathers yet and my Khaki Campbell quacked like a girl.

    Silly ?

I just got my garden in the ground for this year. I had issues earlier in the year with flooding. I may try it anyway. You never know. I have some seeds.... :tools

    Take Our Jobs!

I couldn't agree more. I'm all for LEGAL imigration but I feel that if you are here ILLEGALLY, you are no more than a thief and a crook, stealing things from citizens who need them. How many American children or elderly people go to bed hungry because we are giving benefits to illegal...

    Silly ?

This is only my second year ever planting a garden. I like planting cucumbers for pickles. Up to this point, I've always planted them in hills in the garden. My question is, can you plant these next to a chain link fence for support without tearing your fence up? If I did that then I could...

The Any Wonderful Food You Made From Your Garden Today Thread!

Out of my MIL's garden I made a wonder squash casserole. It had zucchini, yellow squash and tomatoes. Melt some butter and add whatever spices you like (coat the squash) and bake it for 30 minutes. Put some cheese on top and bake another 30 minutes. It was delicious.

Suggestions for Herbs to grow in Green House?

I am going to attempt to do the same thing. I have seeds for dill, cilantro, rosemary, thyme, and majoram ( I think I'm forgetting a few). They have yet to germinate. I think I am going to start them again when the temp cools some. This is my first year with my greenhouse so I'm still...

Growing a Vegetable Garden Saves You Money

I really enjoyed the article. I got out easy as far as initial costs. My husband works with a guy that allowed us to borrow his tiller two years in a row. When I started canning last year, my 94 year old grandmother (who's entire lot was a garden) went into a nursing home and I got all of her...

    Location of greenhouse????

Mine faces north/south so the windows face the correct way. We screwed the fame onto 4x4s and placed it at the edge of my garden. The winds here get pretty wicked especially in twister season and it hasn't budged. I put a good grade of weed barrier down and covered that with mulch. I have...

    Heirloom vs Hybrids

There was a lady in the same town as me that had some plants on FreeCycle. I got several tomato plants from her as well as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. The tomatoes are Granny Cantrell which is, from what I can tell, a heirloom. They already have fruit on them and they are growing in a...

    Fig Tree Rooting Surprise

Congratulations. That's one thing I've never eaten is a fig, and I have no idea why. Sounds like it is easy to grow once you get it rooted?

    Heirloom vs Hybrids

I am seriously considering planting only heirloom seeds next year for my vegetable garden so that I can keep the seeds and the next generation will be true to the parents. But I am curious about how these treasures hold up against the hybrids? Were the hybrids developed because they are better...

    Persimmon Trees

I remember about 30 years ago, when I was a little child, my next door neighbor had a persimmon tree. At that time I lived in southern AR. Anyway, I remember picking persimmons off of his tree and eating them. They were soooo good. I only remember him having one tree so I don't know if it...

    Green Grape with Seeds?!

Maybe it was a hybrid :idunno ? Did they get the vine from a start of their grape vine or did they plant them from seed?
