Seems like everytime I bring in fresh fruit or veggies, I have to deal with those annoying little buggers, too. If they get too bad, I put everything that is on the counters in the fridge for a couple of days. They seem to disappear. If that doesn't work, I mist whatever they are on with water...
If you're not sure if they are hybrid or not, I wouldn't waste my time to save them. Hybrids, may or may not produce and if they do, you don't know what you could get. Although, you may want to save the seeds for roasting as a good for you snack. ;)
Good for you. Daylilies are easy. Don't let the roots dry out too much. You can break them up pretty much any old way. I have actually used a maddock to bust up some of my big clumps. They really don't care. I cut back any foilage to about 2" long. Dig your hole, fill it with water, put the root...
I liked that I got a good harvest this year. I liked the heirloom tomatoes that I planted. I really liked all the okra harvest since I had none last year. I liked that I did not use any fertilizers or pesticides other than organics.
I have a worm bin that I use shredded paper in. Whenever I add a tray, I just use about 2" to lay on top of the food layer. I've done this since June and haven't seen any adverse affects. I don't see anything wrong with adding some of it to your compost pile, especially if it is going to set for...
This year my cuke runners were incredibly long. I picked cukes hanging from okra stalks and tomato plants. Next year, I would like to let them run on cattle fencing or something. They would take up less room and grow straighter and more blemish free.
I want to plant way more onions and some...
It really depends upon your location. How mild/harsh each season is, first projected frost date and last projected frost date.
I live in E. Tenn., so this is a rough outline of the veggies I plant:
Feb. - Mar.: potatoes
Mar-Apr: brocolli, cabbages, brussels, cauliflower, most greens (lettuce...
I haven't noticed any hummingbirds around my feeder since Monday afternoon. I suppose the little creatures are headed farther south to warmer climates. I suppose I need to take the feeders down, clean them and put them away till next year...(sigh).
Sometimes, we do get overwhelmed don't we? My garden was the opposite. It did really well and kept me so busy. Honestly, I was glad to see it go. :P
But, I still can't wait for next year...
For our strawberries I used top soil, garden soil, sawdust and peat moss. Occasionally, I freshen up with compost in the spring. I don't have raised beds for anything else. Hope that helps a little bit. :)
Well, today I had to replace some of the broccoli I had planted a couple of weeks ago. The bugs ate some down to the nub. I really hated to, but I had to sprinkle sevin on it. The organic soap just wasn't doing the job.
