Alright - tools - what works and what doesn't

Where can I buy a Bill garden cart! Actually, I got a wheel barrow for Mother's Day and I don't know how we got along without it all these years. Although my son did let it tip over in the garage with a load of soil in it. I have a stirrup hoe. I used to weed by hand. This year, I'm lazy...

    Hydrangea Blossoms.

I can totally sympathize! (My husband thinks I am nuts too!) This year, before any rain, I cut all open peonies to avoid having them laying down in the mud. I took them to work and treated my colleagues to fresh peonies. They loved them! Sounds like you might have too many hydrangeas for...

    Hydrangea Blossoms.

Hey Backintime. That is so disheartening when the gorgeous blooms catch and hold all that rain and end up on the ground. Always happens with my peonies too. I have always been shy about cutting back hydrangeas after I went a summer once without blooms. I just looked at this website...

"Venomous" Roses? (Yes, I R STUPID)

Wow! I had no idea that rose thorn injuries could be so serious. Scary. Makes me appreciate my thornless rose more.

TEG Is GREEN.... really GREEN and Environment Friendly

Absolutely wonderful. As if I didn't have enough reason to hang out on TEG. It would be great if TEG could be even more green and find some way to encourage all members to use green gardening practices, such as organic pest and weed controls and fertilizing.

    Best/Favorite Cookbooks

My mother's favorite cookbook is the one that came with her wood burning cook stove when she got married, must have been right after WWII was over. I think she still has it and still makes stuff from it, though the wood stove is long gone. I learned to cook in college with Betty Crocker...

    Hydrangea Blossoms.

I believe that most, if not all, hydrangeas bloom on last year's wood, so ill timed pruning will mean no flowers for a season. I LOVE hydrangeas. I just got my fifth one on Mother's Day. I got the BlueWave lacecap. I also have the classic snowball bush (Annabelle), another blue one called...

    Has anyone used zoysia lawn?

I just thought maybe I should check my facts, and I found at least one web site that said that zoysia will turn brown at the first sign of a frost. Also doesn't like shade very much. Ninjapoodles has full sun in Arkansas. Sounds like ideal conditions for zoysia.

Help identifying SC natives? *pic heavy! (7) 320x240s*

I'll just jump in and say that I also think #1 is mullein. If it is, it will jump up real tall and bloom probably yellow. I always think its pretty when I see it growing by the roadside. There are several cultivated varieties too.

    Neighborhood Kids

You are a good person for getting to know the kids first and giving them a chance instead of just assuming that they were only up to no good. This might end up really making a difference in one of those kid's life.

    Harvesting Dill

My mom always stuck a dill flower in every jar of dill pickles she made, along with sprigs of the leaves. Her dill pickles tasted great!

    Creeping Thyme

I have grown it a lot too. I don't consider it very invasive. In fact, I find that it tends to eventually die out.

What is your favorite leaf mulcher/shredder?

Thanks everyone. I have tried the lawn mower method, but it seems to scatter more than it shreds. I forgot about the garbage can/string trimmer method. I will try that too. I just have SOOOO MANY leaves in the fall. Actually, I also decided to pile them up, unshredded where I don't want...

    sedum

I have lots of Autumn Joy sedum too. I have tried it all over the place. Works good in full sun, part shade, but when I tried it in deep shade, it died completely in 2 years. Foxglove is where the heart medication, digitalis, comes from, I believe.

    New to gardening.....

what is roll and grow? it sounds like seed tape. Never have used it. I say the first thing you need to do is read a lot. Go to the public library and get a basic gardening book. While you are doing that, start figuring out exactly where you want your garden and start amending the soil with...

    What is on my tomatoes???!!!!!

Yeah, aphids can come in different colors. When I used to read Organic Gardening, they always recommended just spraying them with a strong spray from a hose. The water will knock them off and I think they don't live long enough to make the trip back up the plant, or they are not good at...
