This ought to be a good one.....who is from BYC??

I'm from BYC but I don't need to grow food for my birds. I just like to garden. I have roses, bearded iris and the typical xeriscape plants one grows in the desert and I also have about 75 trees of various kinds.

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

That's good. My daffodils are coming up also. I think the crocus are coming up. Whatever they are it's not daffodils. I have a piece of an ocotillo cactus that broke off or bent when I was checking to soo if it was still alive. This 12' piece was green inside so it's been planted in a pot...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

I don't think a lot of people realize that when you live in the desert you get very cold weather, wind and sometimes snow. Our average rainfall is 3 inches a year and we've passed that mark already. I'm babying an ocotillo cactus that I stuck in the ground last spring. Nothing on the label...

    Bringing back the roses

Hattie gave you good advice. She knows where all the links are. They should do quite well for you and might even bloom, maybe not as profusely but you might get something. To be that old they deserve a chance. Lots of luck and let me know how they are doing.

    Bringing back the roses

They must be old ones if they look like that. I would prune them so that they are about 6-12 high if you can, taller if not. ( I used to have one in a front garden where I used to live and the trunk was as thick as a tree trunk.) From there they should sprout and grow. I would feed them...

    Desert Flowers

Wow! My raised beds aren't that high off the ground but they're basically the same. I cover mine with plastic like you do but I take it off when the frost is gone and cover the top with shade cloth. I hadn't thought about using a pool though since I don't have little ones at home anymore I...

    Desert Flowers

I use the raised beds and the pvc, over the top to give it the covered wagon look and it works for me both to protect from frost but also wind and sun.

    free trees from arbor day?

The one time I ordered trees from the Arbor Day Foundation they sent me five little crepe myrtle trees of which only two have made it, which for considering our wind problems here I know why....I didn't protect them enough. When I got the catalog to order more it said they couldn't deliver in...

Butterfly Bushes: cutting back to transplant

I have butterfly bush and I prune them about now before they start growing for the season. I have never transplanted them but I would treat them like you would if you were transplanting or planting bare root stock and wait until your last freeze date for your area. I live in zone 8b and if I...

    Desert Flowers

fortunately those high winds don't happen very often, maybe two or three times a season but we have 25-45mph most of the time with wind gusts above 50. As you know they can sure dry things up.

    Desert Flowers

I'm in zone 8b and our winters can get night time lows in the teens and our summer highs in the 100-120 range. It's 8 am and it's 30 outside. I used to live in Albuquerque back in the 50's and it's about the same weather wise except we're only at 2500 feet here. We get a tremendous amount of...
