That takes the cake (Disease pics on post #10)

Theres no telling what you got, but big and round sounds like some form or hybrid of beefstake. If so, you should be pleased with the taste when they finally ripen. Hope it turns well for you.

    Garlic - Pepper Spray ....

I have been gardening 100% organically for 17 years. I have found that very strong soapy water will kill ALL insects, including: cockroaches, wasps, squash bugs, ants, hornets, house flies, moths, grasshoppers, mosquitos, beatles of every type, and any other insect with an exoskeleton. Sorry...

    FIGS!

CD, if you ever try a fully ripe Celeste fig you'll be pleasantly surprised. They are creamy and have none of the grainy texture or large seeds that other figs can have, and they are about twice as sweet as something like a Brown Turkey fig. They are like candy. I wasn't sure i liked figs, based...

    cattails for soggy ditch

I like the cattail idea because they are edible. Just cut the stalks all the way to the ground and replant the tubers in the new location. They will grow back. Here's some other ideas for swampy areas: Iris, Canna, Elephant ears, Cranberry bushes.

    Late season peas

Snow peas, snap peas, and english peas are all very cold and frost tolerant. They don't survive hard freezes very well.

    Proper use of DE

Even food grade DE is dangerous to inhale and can result in siliconoses of the lungs or cancer. Read the warning label on the bag and wear a respirator.

    Proper use of DE

It's probably baby squash bugs, in which case soapy water (1/4 cup of Dawn per gallon of water) is your best bet. Spray the plants leaves on all sides than wait 5 minutes. Come back with a garden hose and rinse the soap and dead bugs off. DE works great for many garden pests. Use a nail or ice...

    FIGS!

You could make fig pies and freeze them. Take about two cups of chopped figs and one cup of sugar. about 1/4 cup of water, a dash of vanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon. Simmer on low stirring frequently, until some of the water is evaporated and the syrup has thickened. Pour in ready to...

Has Anyone Ever Made Chokecherry Jelly or Syrup? Is it tasty?

We don't have chokecherry here but we have lots of wild black cherry. It makes the best tasting jelly on earth.

What I notice about succession planting...

That's the fun of gardening, there's always more to learn. Some seeds start well in cool soil, some need much warmer soil. Our growing season is so long down here that i've been direct sowing into the garden since march!

    onion harvesting questions

Hi, CF! From the looks of your photo, all the tops are down and those onions are ready to harvest. Just rinse the dirt off gently with a garden hose. Spread them out on some newspaper on your dinning room table, in a guest room, or on the porch. It's never good to leave veggies out in the sun or...

    Giant Figs!!

I have celeste, and they are the sweetest, creamiest textured, best tasting fig on earth. Green with a white and pink blush when mature. So sweet that sugar ants will destroy them unless you dust with DE or other organic control. The crops are somewhat unreliable compared brown turkey, sometimes...

    Purslane

Nice photos, Cal. Those should help prevent any confusion. Purselane is easy to identify once you are familiar with it. I use it in soups and salads, even in stir-fry. I wasn't aware of all the health benefits.

    Purslane

WZ is right. You have the thick and fleshy leaves and stems of true purselane. There are one or two look-alikes, ("spurge") that the toxicity of has not yet been determined. WifeZ has good photos of this false purselane: thin stems and flat leaves. It's leaves are often darker in color than the...

    Giant Figs!!

I have several starts of these giant figs that i got from a nieghbor. They can be as big as base balls or bigger. But they are not very sweet compared to other varieties, but make excellent preserves.

    Mildew is shortening my harvest

I mix it with water and use cheap or recycled hand spray bottles. It has been known to clog up the nozzle on my expensive pump sprayer. Sodium bicarbonate seems to be an effective fungicide, but care should be taken around acid loving plants such as blueberry, because baking soda can sweeten...

    Advice on underground sprinkler systems

Rainbird pop-up sprinkler heads are what i used. They are just a couple bucks each. I used cheap pvc pipe and made a sector valves for each zone. I still have to manually turn the water on and off, but no messing with hoses! We have to water a lot around here. I buried the PVC pipes about a foot...

What are eating my 'maters NOW??!

I'm so glad that we don't have any blister beetles around here! They sound like a mean pest. I've found that very strong soapy water will kill most all bugs. Just be sure to rinse your plants with clean water, a couple of minutes later. The soap helps hydrophobic organic soils become easier to...
