I use USED straw & wood chips as mulch here because it's handy for the same reasons and I think they perform beautifully!
If your in doubt...scatter some and let the chickens pick through it for a couple days and then move it over as mulch.
I got another ton of compost, this time about half top soil and am working over the rest of the gardens...
I THINK this is nearly it too... although I may need a little more dirt to finish off my concord grapes which SOMEHOW or another have actually made it through the winter neglected in the...
Nice Kate! A single big wide open space is nice! I have several small spaces to work.
Today I planted some veg I got at Ace Hardware  ... couldn't help it.:/ 9 Romaine, a Pink Lady tomato and a Yellow Pear tomato.. :) the yellow pear are smallish and looked yummy. AND two "blue"...
Sorry darlin, I don't know how I didn't see your question!
A 5 gallon bucket of death is for smaller mice... rats might require a 22 gallon trash can of death.
ANYWAY
Fill the container half full with water
Carefully spread a cup or so of sunflower seeds in the shells on the TOP of the water...
Things are coming along nicely! Sprouts everywhere, great weather! I got my herb garden in yesterday but didn't go with the solar shower... DH promised to get the real one hooked up again for me out there. So I used the entire space for herbs 2' wide X 16' long X 1.5' deep. I had some OLD...
Here are some sightings from around my farm...
All is planted but the radishes are the bigger of the greens here
These are some of the green beans I sprouted inside and then planted directly outside.
sooooo much work still to do! I'm just inside hiding from the heat of the day. :)...
Do you mean those cork screw bulbs with the mercury in them????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ep No thanks ;) I can't buy those. Do you know how many people just chuck them in the trash? I KNOW some of those people!! :( I'm not saying that YOU do of course, I'm sure you take yours to the...

HA!
I am hoping that will be true for me someday... but has not yet been true. I still don't give up though. This WILL be the 1st year I am really making a "real" effort so lots still to learn!
I will re-evaluate and see what I can avoid for this year and like you said ducks... just not NEXT...

I just don't know/think I can DO all that!!!???!!! I'll just have to digest the information and see.
but I already planned to put my sweet potatoes back where they were last year, some bell peppers and definitely the corn!!! although I grow other stuff in between in these places...
my chickens could care less about the mice :(
we went with "5 gallon buckets of death"
caught several mice a night for a few nights... :weee then they wised up or there are only a couple left at the moment.
Personally when I get that crappy arguement about it being "fine in moderation" I force folks to define moderation... because every day, every meal or even every OTHER meal if your a regular person AND careful is STILL TOO OFTEN.. this is not moderation.
same for practically everything.

Those are all great ideas. I guess I have a lasagna garden in my seedless grapes!
I just amended the rest of my garden spaces with mushroom compost for super cheap. Oh my aching back, yesterday I shoveled about half a ton & DH the same! But wow, I'm so excited to have something in there...
Thanks everyone. I was surprised to learn a ton of mushroom compost only costs $42.
It'll be a great addition to our raised beds. Thank you Pat I will keep those guidelines in mind for mixing and also thanks for clearing up the confusion that compost ISN'T soil.
I have Appalachian red...
Pretty self explanatory eh?
Say your filling a 10X10 vegetable bed that is 2' deep.
In the past I've used potting & garden soil but WOW that was pricey and the beds have lowered their levels and I don't want to buy more bagged soil.
Another I used straight top soil and amended the holes I...
I wish I had something to report for ya but I don't. I only added them last year. My dog demolished two of them, I think we will be able to save one of them.
