I use USED straw & wood chips as mulch here because it's handy for the same reasons and I think they perform beautifully! If your in doubt...scatter some and let the chickens pick through it for a couple days and then move it over as mulch.

my chickens could care less about the mice :( we went with "5 gallon buckets of death" caught several mice a night for a few nights... :weee then they wised up or there are only a couple left at the moment.
